LORETTO, Pa. – Dominique Major (Woodbridge, Va./Forest Park) scored seven points in the final 1:32 as the Saint Francis men's basketball team fought off a feisty Fairleigh Dickinson squad with a 68-63 win at DeGol Arena on Saturday afternoon. The win moved the Flash to 8-1 at home this season.
Â
Fairleigh Dickinson (7-14, 2-8) led 61-60 after two
Greg Brown (Odenton, Md./Archbishop Spalding) free throws with 2:31 to play cut the lead to one. After two missed opportunities at the offensive end for the Knights, Major fired a three pointer from the top of the key that found its mark. That gave the Flash a 63-61 lead. After a
Ben Millaud-Meunier (Montreal, Quebec/Vanier) free throw and a layup by FDU's Mustafaa Jones, the lead was back to a single point, 64-63.
Â
Major sank both free throws to push the lead to three, and he pushed the score to its final spot with two more makes from the line after an FDU turnover. In all, Major scored all 10 of his points in the second half and seven came in the final 92 seconds. The three biggest came on that shot from the top of the key to give the Flash a lead it wouldn't relinquish.
Â
"If I miss one, I have to be ready to make the next one," Major said. "The confidence that [coach Krimmel] has in me makes me confident in myself."
Â
Major was one of four Red Flash players to score in double figures.
Earl Brown (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter) led all players with 18 points and 12 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the season. Freshman
Basil Thompson (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter) reached double digits for the first time in his career, finishing with 13 points and a career-high seven rebounds in 22 minutes.
Â
Thompson was also 7-for-8 from the free throw line, highlighting a big game from the Flash at the charity stripe. Saint Francis finished the contest 22-for-29 (75.9 percent) at the line, including making 7-of-8 in a 2:16 stretch late in the game. The strong free-throw shooting helped offset the Flash's six made three pointers, a season-low for the Flash in a game that it ended up winning.
Â
Two of Thompson's made free throws gave the Flash its largest lead of the day, a 31-20 advantage with 3:45 to play in the first half. But Fairleigh Dickinson fought back with a 12-4 run to end the half to send the Flash into the locker room with a 35-32 lead.
Â
A three pointer from Jones with 16:30 remaining gave the Knights a short-lived lead, 40-39. But Thompson sandwiched an
Earl Brown (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter) jumper with two buckets of his own to put the Flash ahead, 45-40, with 13:28 to play.
Major's first made three pointer of the game broke a tie and gave the Flash a 48-45 lead. After a stop and a score from
Stephon Whyatt (Jersey City, N.J./St. Peter's Prep), it looked like the Flash may finally pull away. But the Knights fought back over the next several minutes, getting a layup from Marques Townes to tie the score at 56-56 with 5:08 to play and a three pointer from him less than two minutes later to give the Knights a lead it would hold until Major's big shot with 1:32 remaining.
Â
The Flash has now won eight of nine against FDU, and it can extend that streak in its next game. The teams will complete a home-and-home with the Knights next Thursday night in game televised on Fox College Sports and MSG. Tip is scheduled for 9:00 p.m.
