Game Recap: Field Hockey | | Dan Griffin

Seabrook Leads Field Hockey Past Minutemen

LORETTO, PA-  Brea Seabrook (Wilkes Barre, Pa./GAR Memorial) scored early in the second half and the Red Flash defense made it hold up in a 1-0 win over the Massachusetts Minutemen on Sunday at DeGol Field.

The freshman's goal came off a scramble in front of the net. Selena Adamshick (Harveys Lake, Pa./Lake-Lehman) fed Seabrook who put one past a sprawled out Sam Carlino for the match's only goal.

The Red Flash controlled most of the first half play, out shooting UMass 8-3 in the opening 35. SFU's best chance came off a string of penalty corners, Elizabeth Momeyer (Harrison City, Pa./Penn Trafford) had a shot blocked that resulted in a penalty corner. Off the corner, Irene Fritschy (Zwolle, The Netherlands) beat Carlino but her shot rang off the far post and Shannon Pereira (Toronto, Ontario, Canada/Francis Libermann Catholic)'s shot sailed just over the net. The Saint Francis' defense allowed just three opening-half shots, and Samantha Zeiders (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) saved the only one on goal. It would be scoreless at the half.

UMass pressured to start the second half with Zeiders making a nice save in traffic off a penalty corner. Shortly after the Minutemen's press, the Red Flash countered and Seabrook capitalized on the loose ball in traffic. Her second goal of the year proved to be the game winner.

The Minutemen would not go quietly on Sunday. Needing the equalizer, UMass increased pressure, resulting in 10 second-half penalty corners. The Minutemen's best chance came with just over three minutes left off a penalty corner, but the SFU defense blocked the shot on goal and Zeiders slid over to control the rebound. The SFU defense stood tall, allowing just four shots on goal and seven shots total in the half, despite UMass selling out to score. Zeiders made four second-half saves to preserve the win.

Saint Francis picked up its first A-10 win and sit 1-2 in conference and 6-5 overall. They will host Lock Haven on Friday and Saint Louis on Sunday in a big A-10 weekend. Friday's match will start at 3pm.
