Game Recap: Field Hockey | | Dan Griffin

Davidson Tops Field Hockey in Overtime

LORETTO, PA.- The Davidson Wildcats counter-attacked off a Red Flash penalty corner and scored nine minutes into overtime to top SFU 1-0 in the cold, rainy A-10 home opener for Saint Francis.

With the loss, Saint Francis falls to 4-5 on the season and 0-2 in A-10 play while Davidson improves to 6-4 and remains unbeaten at 3-0 in the A-10.

The Red Flash set the tone early on Friday, earning two penalty corners within the match's first five minutes and four in the first 10 minutes. The Flash got two shots off the penalty corners, both by Irene Fritschy (Zwolle, The Netherlands), the first one sailed just over the net, the second was stopped by keeper Emily Leytham. Davidson's lone strong scoring chance of the first half, came midway through when they strung together a pair of penalty corners. Senior net minders Samantha Zeiders (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) made a pair of nice saves to keep the game scoreless.  In the 21st minute, the Red Flash stormed the Davidson goal, earning three penalty corners in just under 90 seconds. SFU unleashed four shots, but Leytham made three saves and a fourth opportunity was blocked. The best chance came off a pass by Selena Adamshick (Harveys Lake, Pa./Lake-Lehman) that was knocked on goal by Brea Seabrook (Wilkes Barre, Pa./GAR Memorial), Leytham just got an arm on the ball and it rolled just wide of the goal.  Davidson was charged with a yellow card late in the half that put the Red Flash up a player. Fritschy again had two solid chances on goal but again was turned away. It would be scoreless after 35 minutes.

It would be the Wildcats that came out of the half on the attack. They earned two penalty corners early in the half after a shot by Lucy Pidcock rolled just wide of the goal. Zeiders again rose to the occasion, stopping three shots on goal, including a beautiful blocker pad save that all but ended the rally. After that rush, Saint Francis pushed the tempo for the rest of the half. Again, the Flash earned penalty corners but shots were either turned aside or blocked as the ball was not bouncing the Red Flash's way. Late in regulation, SFU had one more charge, Fritschy had a shot blocked and the rebound went to Michelle Lipski (Shavertown, Pa./Lake-Lehman). Her shot on goal somehow found the tip of Leytham's foot, who sent it wide of the goal. Seventy minutes would not be enough as the teams went to overtime.

In the extra frame, Zeiders made a key save early as the Wildcats looked to end the game in the opening minute. The Red Flash countered, earning four penalty corners in a two minute span. SFU put three shots on net, all stopped by Leytham. The final shot by Fritschy, led to a Davidson counter. Lucy Pidcock took the ball on the counter and worked into the top of the circle. Her shot, through traffic found the low-left corner of the net for the golden goal.

Saint Francis dominated the stat sheet, out shooting Davidson 19-13 including a 14-8 edge in shots on goal. The big discrepancy came on penalty corners, where SFU owned a 19-5 advantage. SFU will look to bounce back on Sunday when they travel to Villanova to take on the Wildcats. Face-off for the non-conference match is set for 530 p.m.
