Football Comeback Attempt at Bryant Falls Short, 26-24

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Khairi Dickson (Cleveland, Ohio/Cleveland Central Catholic) scored his second touchdown of the game with 1:31 left in the fourth quarter to give the Saint Francis football team a chance to tie the game on a two-point conversion. However, Zack Drayer (Hershey, Pa./Hershey )'s pass to Will Martin was incomplete as the Red Flash's comeback attempt fell short, 26-24 at Bryant.  SFU scored 21 unanswered points in the second half after Bryant scored in the third quarter.  Saint Francis is now 4-3 overall and 1-1 in the NEC, while Bryant improved to 4-3 and 2-1 in conference play.

Dickson ran for 130 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries and gained 67 yards on four receptions, including a 42-yard gain on a screen play on the Red Flash's final drive.  It was Dickson's 13th 100-yard game of his career and a career-high for receiving yards.  Drayer completed 22-of-37 attempts for 259 yards and a touchdown.  Daniel Adams (Washington, D.C./Northwestern) hauled in eight catches for 78 yards and a score, while Terell Smith (West Haverstraw, N.Y./North Rockland) had seven receptions for 60 yards and Anthony Abeid (Youngstown, Ohio/Youngstown Christian) added two catches for 57 yards.

Saint Francis outgained Bryant, 374-282.  The Red Flash gained 259 passing yards and 115 rushing yards.

Defensively, Delondo Boyd (Indian Head, Md./Henry E. Lackey) had an interception, while Lorenzo Jerome (Sunrise, Fla./J.P. Taravella), Solomon Leaeno (Kapolei, Hawaii/James Campbell) and Semo Sila (Honolulu, Hawaii /Farrington) tied for the team lead with six stops.  Leaeno added 1.5 tackles for loss, while Jerome and Sila each had one stop for loss.  Wesley Nagaseu (Waipahu, Hawaii/Waipahu) contributed five tackles, with one for loss.

After leading 19-3 at the half, Bryant added another score on a blocked punt, which was recovered by Brandon Owens for a 16-yard return for a touchdown.

Dickson earned the Red Flash's first trip to the end zone, scoring on a 16-yard run to end the third quarter.  Dickson took the direct snap in the wildcat formation and patiently waited for a hole to open before bursting through the left side.  Dickson had four runs for 77 yards on the drive, including a 41 yard carry.  Lance Geesey (Harrisburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley)'s extra point made it 26-10.

With 6:39 left in the game, Drayer hit Adams for a 13-yard touchdown.  Adams caught the ball on the left side, broke a tackle, and took it into the end zone.  The Red Flash cut the deficit to eight on a two-point conversion pass from Drayer to Martin, who held the catch through a hit.  Drayer completed four passes on the drive, connecting with Adams, Abeid and Smith for a total of 39 yards.

After holding Bryant to a three-and-out, the Red Flash put together a seven-play, 76-yard drive in 2:46, with Dickson scoring on a five-yard run on another direct snap.  Drayer hit Adams for passes of 14 and four yards before Dickson broke loose on a screen play for a 42-yard gain to the Bryant 15-yard line.  Drayer connected with Smith for a 10-yard gain to setup Dickson's score.  On the two-point conversion, Drayer had good protection but the Bryant secondary dropped into very tight coverage.  Drayer threw it to Martin in the corner of the end zone, but Martin was forced out of bounds by the Bryant defender.

On the onside kick, Bryant recovered and then gained a first down on a run play to close out the game.

In the first half, Bryant got on the board first as Jose Depadua returned the opening kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown.

Saint Francis responded with a nine-play, 64-yard drive covering 4:16, which ended with a 32-yard field goal by Lance Geesey (Harrisburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley).  The drive included a 43-yard strike from Zack Drayer (Hershey, Pa./Hershey ) to Anthony Abeid (Youngstown, Ohio/Youngstown Christian), down to the five-yard line.  However, the Red Flash could not get the ball in the end zone, resulting in Geesey's kick.

The Bulldogs got a touchdown on the ensuing drive, on a nine-yard run by Ricardo McCray, the leading rusher in the NEC.

After a Bryant punt downed at the one yard line, Marcus Bagley (Cleveland Heights, Ohio/Cleveland Heights) was stopped in the end zone for a safety to put the Bulldogs up 16-3 with 13:12 left in the second quarter.

Bryant added a 32-yard field goal near the end of the half to go into the break, up 19-3.

Next week, the Red Flash return home to face Sacred Heart on Homecoming.  Kickoff is at Noon with coverage on NEC Front Row.
