Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Dan Griffin

Late Goal Gives Men's Soccer Senior Day Victory

LORETTO, PA- The Red Flash out shot Robert Morris 23-7 but could not find the net until Mario Mastrangelo (Venetia, Pa/Peters Township) powered home a Andres Vega (Managua, Nicaragua/Colegio Centro America) cross in the 88th minute, giving SFU a 1-0 win on Senior Day.

The men's soccer team honored seniors: Andrew Garcia (Sicklerville, N.J./Timber Creek Regional), Andrew Hajec (Corry, Pa./Corry), Pablo Medina (Monterrey, Mexico/IMG Academies), Conner and Calvin Rezende (Davie, Fla. /University School at Nova Southeastern), and Jack Webber (Bernville, Pa./Tulpehocken) in a pre-match ceremony.

With both teams having clinched a spot in the NEC playoffs next weekend at LIU Brooklyn, seeding and bragging rights were the only things at stake on Sunday.

The Red Flash came out the aggressor in the match as SFU forced Robert Morris keeper Brendan Alfery into three saves in the opening 10 minutes of action. Despite the early pressure, Robert Morris had the best early scoring chance. The Colonials were awarded a free kick just inside the 18-box after SFU starting keeper Andrew Garcia (Sicklerville, N.J./Timber Creek Regional) played a pass back to him with his hands, resulting in the foul. Francis deVriesblocked the Neco Brett free kick and Garcia made a save on Brett on the ensuing corner kick. The Red Flash mounted a counter off the Garcia save and Conner Rezende (Davie, Fla. /University School at Nova Southeastern) had the Flash's best scoring chance of the half but his shot was stopped by Alfery who deflected it just wide of the near post. It would be scoreless going into the half.

The team's traded offensive momentum early in the half, but neither team had great chances, despite the shots on goal. In the 60th minute de Vries rocketed a free kick that was deflected wide of the goal and the junior's header off the following corner was plucked out of the air by Alfreyjust under the crossbar. The Red Flash continued to push offensively, but could not find the net. Saint Francis had a three-on-one opportunity in the 68th minute but Vega's shot was tipped wide by a sprawling Alfery.

Marcus Rojas (Fremont, Calif./Bellarmine College Preparatory), who relieved Garcia in the 52nd minute, made a couple of saves to keep the match scoreless. RMU's biggest opportunity came off a Lucas Puntillo free kick in the 74th minute, Rojas had the ball deflect in front of him but stayed with the shot to make the save.

In the 88th minute, Andres Vega (Managua, Nicaragua/Colegio Centro America) caught up with a loose ball on the right side and played a beautiful cross into Mastrangelo. The freshman had gotten in behind the defense, settled the ball down and sent a shot into the upper 90 for the match's only goal. It was the freshman's 10th goal of the season, a team high. RMU could not pressure in the match's final two minutes as Saint Francis secured the two seed in the NEC tourney with the win.

The victory closes out the regular season for both teams. Saint Francis improved to 10-5-3- on the season and 5-2 in NEC play while Robert Morris sits at 10-7-1 overall and 4-2-1 in the NEC. The Red Flash out shot RMU 23-7 including 11-5 in shots on goal. With LIU's win over St. Francis-Brooklyn, these two teams will meet next weekend in the NEC semi-finals. Match time has not been set.
