Late Run Pushes St. Bonaventure past Red Flash

OLEAN, N.Y. (March 19, 2015) – In the first-ever meeting between the two schools, St. Bonaventure used a late run to beat the Saint Francis U women's lacrosse team, 13-9, on Thursday afternoon.

Christina Fini (Huntington, N.Y./Smithtown East), Holly Lawrence (Damascus, Md./Damascus), and Sarah Mahon (Malverne, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) each netted two goals to lead the Red Flash, while Heather McKee (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright Bel Air) posted 13 saves in net. It was the first win of the season for the Bonnies, who were 0-6 entering the contest.

Lawrence scored the first goal of the game a minute and a half in to give the Flash the first lead of the game. The Bonnies responded by scoring three unanswered goals over the next 10 minutes to take a 3-1 lead.

The Red Flash then scored three consecutive goals to regain the lead. Mahon scored her first of the day off a pass from Rebecca Meyer (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton) followed by tallies from Blair Rosenberg (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor) and Lindsay Ingram (Stewartstown, Pa./York Catholic).

St. Bonaventure tied the game at four apiece at the 13:32 mark of the first half and then SFU took a two-goal advantage after Fini and Mahon each scored. The Bonnies scored twice in the final four minutes of half one and the game was tied at six at the break.

Jessica Fischetti (Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) scored the first goal of period number two, this time Mahon picked up an assist and the Flash led, 7-6. St. Bonaventure scored three straight goals for the second time during the game and led 9-7 with about 20 minutes to play.

Lawrence and Fini each scored again to tie the game at nine at the 15:17 mark. The Bonnies would then hold SFU scoreless for the final 15 minutes and scored four goals.

SFU was outshot 34-18 in the game, but held the lead in draw controls, 15-10. That total was infused by Lawrence, who posted six. Fini led the Red Flash with four ground balls, while Kimberly Gronski (Corning, N.Y./Corning East High) had a team-high two caused turnovers. Katie Schaaf (Ellicott City, Md./Hebron) added an assist in the game.

Saint Francis U opens its home slate on Saturday when Delaware State visits Loretto for a 1 p.m. first draw. SFU owns a 2-0 all-time record against the Hornets, including a 20-2 victory at home in 2013.
