BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. (March 5, 2015) – A total team effort led the Saint Francis University women's lacrosse team to a 15-6 victory over Gardner-Webb on Thursday evening. The Red Flash has now won two games in a row on their spring break trip down south.
Head coach
Gregg Gebhard became the program's all-time winningest coach after earning his 13th victory in just his fourth season at the helm.
Saint Francis saw eight different players score in the contest and was led by freshman
Jessica Fischetti (Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) as she rookie scored three goals and added two assists and
Rebecca Meyer (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton), who had three goals and a helper.
SFU fired 38 shots in the game with 27 of them going on net.
Lindsay Ingram (Stewartstown, Pa./York Catholic), Fischetti, and
Holly Lawrence (Damascus, Md./Damascus) each tallied six shots apiece. The Flash also held the advantage in draw controls, 17-6. Ingram,
Kimberly Gronski (Corning, N.Y./Corning East High), and
Sydney Shearer (Morgantown, W. Va./Morgantown) had four each.
Saint Francis was held scoreless by Gardner-Webb for the first 15 minutes and the Runnin' Bulldogs scored two goals in that span to lead 2-0 midway through the opening period. It was Ingram who got SFU on the board at the 15:33 mark off a pass from
Katie Schaaf (Ellicott City, Md./Hebron).
The flood gates opened as
Sarah Mahon (Malverne, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) scored three minutes later and was followed by another Ingram goal and two from Fischetti that were only seconds apart and SFU led 5-2. GWU scored one to break up the Flash run, but Meyer and Shearer each scored before time expired in the first half and the Flash led 7-3 at halftime.
Gardner-Webb started the scoring in half two about four minutes in before SFU got rolling again. Lawrence scored the first one of the second half for the Flash at the 24:47 mark and sparked a 5-0 run. The other four goals in the span were credited to Shearer, Schaaf, Mahon, and Meyer and the Flash held the 12-4 lead.
GWU would sprinkle two more goals in, but the Flash also received tallies from Fischetti,
Christina Fini (Huntington, N.Y./Smithtown East), and Meyer down the stretch to close out the victory.
The Flash was also near perfect in clear attempts as they converted on 10-of-11. Schaaf totaled a season-high four assists in the game.
Grace Smith (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy Orange) led Saint Francis in ground balls with five and caused turnovers with four.
Heather McKee (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright Bel Air) picked up another win between the pipes for the Flash as the sophomore is now 2-2 after posting seven saves.
Saint Francis wraps up its southern tour with a stop at Davidson on Saturday. Opening draw is scheduled for 1 p.m.
