DAVIDSON, N.C. (March 7, 2015) – The Saint Francis U women's lacrosse team fell at Davidson, 17-9, in its spring break trip finale on Saturday afternoon.
The Red Flash finished 2-2 on its trip down south after picking up wins against Mercer and Gardner-Webb. The Flash was led by
Christina Fini (Huntington, N.Y./Smithtown East) and
Rebecca Meyer (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton), who each scored three goals. Fini also posted three assists and two draw controls. Davidson only outshot the Red Flash, 21-19, but the Wildcats converted on nearly all their attempts.
Davidson took a commanding 7-1 lead in the opening period, Fini scored the lone goal for SFU at the 22 minute mark, it went unassisted. SFU's second goal came from Meyer at the 13:13 mark and the deficit was within five.
The Wildcats would score twice more before halftime, but the Red Flash tallied four goals before the break. Fini scored two of them, while Meyer and
Sarah Mahon (Malverne, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) each scored.
Katie Schaaf (Ellicott City, Md./Hebron) assisted on the Mahon tally and Davidson led 10-6 at halftime.
Davidson scored the first five goals of the second half and held a 15-6 advantage with 17:35 to play. Meyer scored to break up the Wildcats run with 14:36 left in the game.
Jessica Fischetti (Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) and
Sydney Rowan (Rochester, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy) each scored later in the period to finalize the points for SFU. It was Rowan's first collegiate goal.
Heather McKee (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright Bel Air) took the loss in net, but finished with 10 saves. She also led the team in ground balls with five.
Saint Francis U will head north and play at Duquesne on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
