LORETTO, Pa. (April 19, 2015) – A well-balanced effort led the Saint Francis U women's lacrosse team to a fight with the Northeast Conference's top team, but Bryant prevailed 17-10 in Loretto on Sunday afternoon.
The Bulldogs moved to a perfect 5-0 in NEC play after the win. The Red Flash played an even second half with Bryant as each team notched six goals. SFU honored its lone senior
Kimberly Gronski (Corning, N.Y./Corning East High) prior to today's contest. The four-year starter and captain appeared in all 64 possible games during her career.
Bryant opened the game with three goals in the first five minutes before the Red Flash got on the board as
Lindsay Ingram (Stewartstown, Pa./York Catholic) converted the free position attempt.
The Bulldogs extended its lead to 7-1 over the next five minutes.
Rebecca Meyer (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton) then scored two goals in a row with assists going to
Sydney Shearer (Morgantown, W. Va./Morgantown) and
Katie Schaaf (Ellicott City, Md./Hebron). Bryant would score four more in the opening half,
Christina Fini (Huntington, N.Y./Smithtown East) tallied one more for SFU and Bryant held the 11-4 advantage at halftime.
Holly Lawrence (Damascus, Md./Damascus) notched a goal about four minutes into the second frame, with Schaaf earning another helper. Schaaf has now totaled 57 assists in her three years at Saint Francis, she needs just four more to pass Kate Simmons (60) and
Danielle Conwell (Roxbury, N.J./Roxbury) (60) for the all-time lead.
Bryant added another to extend its lead to 12-5, SFU followed with goals from
Blair Rosenberg (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor) and another from Fini. The Bulldogs quickly responded with two and led 14-7 with 11:36 to play.
Lawrence scored her second of the day followed by three straight from Bryant.
Jessica Fischetti (Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) scored a one-timer type goal as a
Sarah Mahon (Malverne, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) pass beat Bryant goalie Daja Andrews to the spot. Mahon then scored the final goal of the game with less than a minute to play.
Anai Flanagan (Rochester, N.Y./Hilton) filled the stat sheet for SFU with four ground balls and three caused turnovers. Ingram posted a team-high four draw controls.
Heather McKee (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright Bel Air) and
Elizabeth Henry (Wilmington, Del./Delaware Military Academy) again split time in net for Saint Francis. Each posted three saves, and Mckee took the loss.
Saint Francis U will hit the road for its final two regular season contests. The Flash plays next at LIU Brooklyn on Friday at 4 p.m.
