Fini Records Hat-Trick in Loss at LIU Brooklyn

BROOKLYN (April 24, 2015) – In its final regular season road trip, the Saint Francis U women's lacrosse team found itself in a battle down the stretch with LIU Brooklyn, but it lost, 11-10, on Friday afternoon.

The Red Flash were up by two at halftime and despite surrendering seven goals in the second half, they still had a chance to even the game with less than a minute to play. Christina Fini (Huntington, N.Y./Smithtown East) led the offense with three goals, two of which came in the final seven minutes.

The Flash came out firing on all cylinders and put up four quick goals on the Blackbirds. Rebecca Meyer (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton) scored first with Sarah Mahon (Malverne, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) picking up the assist about two minutes in. Holly Lawrence (Damascus, Md./Damascus) and Mahon both scored, followed by Katie Schaaf (Ellicott City, Md./Hebron)'s eighth tally of the season and SFU led 4-0.

LIU Brooklyn scored around the 17-minute mark and then each team locked down defensively for the next 13 minutes of play. The Blackbirds Jenn Peters broke the drought at the 4:28 mark and SFU led 4-2. Lawrence scored another off a pass from Schaaf and the Flash was back up three.

LIU scored twice more in the final two minutes of half one, but freshman Jessica Fischetti (Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) snuck one past LIU goalie Alexis Maldonado with less than a second to play. The assist went to Blair Rosenberg (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor). SFU led 6-4 at the halftime break.

Saint Francis U struck first in the second half as Fini scored off a feed from Lindsay Ingram (Stewartstown, Pa./York Catholic). The Flash would then go nearly 20 minutes without a goal and in that span LIU went on a 7-0 run to take an 11-7 lead.

The Flash battled back at the end as Fini scored twice more and Fischetti tallied her second of the game to get within one. The Blackbirds were able to create a turnover on SFU's final attempt to tie the game at 11.

Grace Smith (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy Orange) and Kimberly Gronski (Corning, N.Y./Corning East High) each tallied three ground balls for SFU. Ingram led the squad in draw controls with three, while Schaaf added a pair of caused turnovers. Heather McKee (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright Bel Air) took the loss for SFU, but recorded six saves in net.

The Red Flash will wrap up its regular season at Sacred Heart on Sunday. Opening draw is scheduled for 2 p.m.
