Volleyball Falls in Wright State Finale

DAYTON, Ohio – The Saint Francis women's volleyball team lost in three sets Sunday afternoon to Wright State, 25-15 25-22 and 25-20. Hannah Kutny (Clifton Park, N.Y./Catholic Central) led the team with 18 digs and 10 kills. She was also named to the Wright State All-Tournament Team.

Kills from Chelsea Easter (Burlington, Ontario, Canada/Notre Dame Roman Catholic) and Lauren Williams (Reno, Nev./Damonte Ranch) helped the Flash jump out to a 7-3 lead in game one, but Wright State responded with a 9-0 run to take a 12-7 lead. Kutny had three kills late in the set, but it wasn't enough as the Flash fell, 25-15.

In game two, a kill from Emily Marcinowski (Strongsville, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) fueled a 4-0 run to put the Flash ahead, 12-9. Wright State scored the next five points to make it 14-12, but the Flash came back to tie the score at 19 with back-to-back points. Breanna Opera (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster ) scored a kill to tie the score at 20, but Wright State scored the next four points to push the game to set point. SFU cut the lead to 24-22 with consecutive kills from Marcinowski, but Wright State finished the game with a 25-22 victory.

After falling behind 8-4 in set three, the Flash scored four straight to tie the score. Easter and Sophie Murdock (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion ) had kills on the run for SFU. A run of three straight kills from Marcinowski, Kelsey Roush (Johnstown, Pa./Richland) and Kutny gave the Flash a 14-13 lead, and the score stayed tight until 17-17. At that point, Wright State ran off four straight points and six of the next seven to grab control of the game. Two kills by Maria Cup (Chesterland, Ohio/Gilmour Academy) brought the Flash to within 24-20, but again Wright State was able to close out the set and the match.

Jenna Veres (Independence, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) tied Kutny for the team lead with 18 digs. Marcinowski finished with nine kills. Cup and Murdock each had three blocks to lead SFU.

SFU plays its first home match of the season on Friday night as part of the Red Flash Classic. Saint Francis hosts Fordham at 7 p.m. Coppin State and High Point will square off at 4 p.m. to open the Classic, and all four teams will have two additional matches on Saturday.
