SFU Comeback Falls Short Against Coppin State

LORETTO, Pa.- Saint Francis stormed back to force a fifth set, but the comeback fell short against the Coppin State Eagles, falling 15-7 in the deciding set in the finale of the Red Flash Classic on Saturday.

Chelsea Easter (Burlington, Ontario, Canada/Notre Dame Roman Catholic) tied a team season high with 17 kills to lead a balanced Red Flash effort while Kelsey Roush (Johnstown, Pa./Richland) added 19 digs to lead the defensive effort.

The Red Flash took the first set 25-20, leading wire-to-wire to grab an early match lead. Easter had six kills to lead a team that hit .405 in the first set. Coppin State held off a Red Flash comeback in set two, taking it 26-24. The Eagles led 22-19 after breaking open a back-and-forth set. SFU rallied back to tie the set at 24 but Cindy Okpegbue had two of her match-high 20 kills to clinch the set for the Eagles. Set three followed the same script as the second. Coppin State broke open a 17-17 tie to lead 23-18 only to see the Flash rally back to within one. However, Okpegbue closed out the set again with a kill as the Eagles took a two set to one lead.

Emily Marcinowksi led the offense in set four, firing four kills to help force a fifth set. The Red Flash jumped out to a 12-5 lead and maintained it throughout the set. A kill and ace from Maria Cup (Chesterland, Ohio/Gilmour Academy) put the Flash on the doorstep of a fifth set and the defense forced an Eagle error to send the match to a deciding set.

In the fifth, the teams traded points until Easter and Jenna Veres (Independence, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) got kills to give Saint Francis a 7-5 lead. It would be all Coppin State from there on out, winning the final 10 points of the match. The Eagles' defense blocked the final two Red Flash attacks to put the match away.

The loss sends SFU to 2-13 overall on the season as they close out non-conference play. The NEC opener is set for next Saturday when Robert Morris comes to Loretto. First serve is set for 5 p.m.
