Men's Soccer Plays Lehigh to Scoreless Draw

LORETTO, Pa. – A physical match between the Saint Francis men's soccer team and Lehigh on Sunday afternoon had plenty of scoring chances and several cautions, but it did not feature a goal. The Red Flash tied the Mountain Hawks, 0-0.

Calvin Rezende (Davie, Fla. /University School at Nova Southeastern) led the Red Flash with four shots on goal, and he had two great opportunities in the first half. In the 14th minute, his shot from about 25 yards away was destined for the back netting, but Lehigh keeper Joe Bogan made a leaping save to deflect the shot high. Nine minutes later, Rezende and Pablo Medina (Monterrey, Mexico/IMG Academies) played give-and-go at the top of the box. The ball ended up on Rezende's foot, but his shot from the left side was again turned away by Bogan.

Later in the half, Lehigh's Jamie Luchini settled a bounding ball just inside the six-yard box, but Andrew Garcia (Sicklerville, N.J./Timber Creek Regional) stood tall to make the save. In the 33rd minute, Gianfranco Giammatteo got behind the Red Flash defense and sent a low shot at Garcia, but he was also denied. Garcia made seven saves for the Flash.

Fifteen minutes into the second half, Luchini and Doyle Tuvesson made a run on a ball deep in Red Flash territory, but Garcia managed to slide in ahead of the two Lehigh players to take the pass. The Flash's best chance in the second half came with just over five minutes to play. Brendan McGhee (Pickering, Ontario, Canada/St. Mary's Catholic) had a point blank opportunity with the ball loose deep in Lehigh territory. His shot was turned aside by Bogan. McGhee finished with two shots on goal.

In the first overtime, Andrew Hajec (Corry, Pa./Corry) tried to finish a nice connection from Conner Rezende (Davie, Fla. /University School at Nova Southeastern) and McGhee, but his shot went wide. In the second overtime, Mario Mastrangelo (Venetia, Pa/Peters Township) looked to end the contest in the Red Flash's favor with a good opportunity on the right side, but Bogan came out to challenge and was able to get a piece of the ball. Mastrangelo had three shots on goal.

The Red Flash outshot Lehigh, 18-15. The teams also combined for five yellow cards.

At halftime, the Red Flash honored five-year-old Thomas Lill as the newest men's soccer team member by way of Team IMPACT. That organization matches children with chronic or life threatening illnesses with college athletic teams around the country. Thomas becomes the third Team IMPACT child to be matched with a Saint Francis University team. He joins Jorden McClure (men's basketball) and Brent Zierer (football) as honorary Red Flash team members.

Thomas' new teammates are back in action Friday when the Red Flash hosts St. Bonaventure at Stokes Soccerplex at 4 p.m.
