Men's Soccer Holds Off Bonnies

LORETTO, Pa.- Andres Vega (Managua, Nicaragua/Colegio Centro America) scored in the 34th minute and the Red Flash defense made it stand up in a 1-0 Red Flash victory over the Saint Bonaventure Bonnies on Friday at the Stokes SoccerPlex.

Saint Francis ran their unbeaten streak to six matches and improved to 4-1-3 on the season.

The Flash pressured the Bonnies' backline for much of the first half. However, they couldn't find the back of the net, with shots going wide or being blocked by a collapsing Bonaventure defense.  Following a Bonaventure corner kick, the Red Flash counter-attacked. Francis de Vries (Christchurch, New Zealand/Cashmere) dribbled through the defense and deflected the ball off a defender to Vega. Vega bent a shot around the defense and froze the keeper, the ball went into the upper-left 90 to make it 1-0.  The Flash would continue to push, but could not score again. The Flash out shot the Bonnies 14-1 in the first half and led 1-0 at the break.

SFU looked to extend the lead early in the second half, quickly earning two corner kicks and putting three shots on target. However, SBU keeper Bobby Diaz challenged each shot to keep it a 1-0 contest. The Bonnies began to press, looking for the equalizer over the match's final half hour. The Bonnies' best chance was negated on an offside call as a pair of SBU attackers got in behind the defense. Bonaventure earned three corner kicks but could not put a shot on goal to challenge keeper Andrew Garcia (Sicklerville, N.J./Timber Creek Regional).  The senior made one first-half save to earn the clean sheet, his fifth of the season and sixth for the Flash this season.

The Red Flash return to action on Sunday for their final road non-conference match of the year when they travel to Hartford to take on the Hawks.  Match time is set for noon.
