Men's Soccer Plays Hartwick To Scoreless Draw

ONEONTA, N.Y.- For the second time in three regular-season matches, the Saint Francis men's soccer team played to a scoreless draw. The Red Flash and the Hartwick Hawks drew in the finale of the 40th annual Mayor's Cup.

The two defending champions of their respective conferences were very even across the 110 minutes on Sunday. The Hawks held a slim 14-11 shot advantage and both teams had four shots on goal. The Flash held a 5-4 edge in corners and were whistled offside three times.

In the first half, Pablo Medina (Monterrey, Mexico/IMG Academies), Conner Rezende (Davie, Fla. /University School at Nova Southeastern) and Andres Vega (Managua, Nicaragua/Colegio Centro America) had their shots blocked and Brendan McGhee (Pickering, Ontario, Canada/St. Mary's Catholic) was turned away by Hawks' keeper Lenny Wilson.  Defensively, the Red Flash were strong once again.  The Hawks were held to two errant shots and one blocked shot in the first half.

The teams traded missed chances on corner kicks early in the second half. Jack Webber (Bernville, Pa./Tulpehocken) had his shot blocked while the Hawks sent a shot wide. Andrew Garcia (Sicklerville, N.J./Timber Creek Regional) had to make a couple of tough saves midway through the half to keep the match scoreless. The Flash's final scoring opportunity in regulation came off a corner kick but once again Webber had his shot blocked.

In the overtime, Garcia made a nice save off a header from Jack Miller. Saint Francis countered off the save but McGhee's shot was stopped again by Lenny Wilson.  In the second overtime, neither team put a shot on goal. McGhee had his shot blocked while Webber sent a header wide. Webber and Francis DeVries were named to the Mayor's Cup All-Tournament team for their efforts this weekend.

The Red Flash now sit at 0-1-2 on the season. They will head to Lewisburg, Pennsylvania to take on Bucknell on Friday before their regular-season home opener on Sunday versus Niagara. Match time on Friday is set for 7 p.m.
