Jeff Hogan (Northern Cambria, Pa./Northern Cambria)'s double-double helped led the Saint Francis men's volleyball team to an upset over the #9-ranked Lewis University Flyers at Neil Carey Arena on Friday night in a five-set thriller. The Flash won the match 26-24, 21-25, 25-23, 17-25, 15-8.
"We have all the pieces to win. If the guys believe in themselves, we can beat anybody. It comes down to confidence, hard work and creating our own luck," said head coach
Mike Rumbaugh. "I think that our biggest difference this week from last week was the ability to dig, extend and win the long rallies."
The Red Flash improve to 1-2 overall, while the Flyers fall to 3-2.
Hogan led the Flash with 23 kills, three service aces and 14 digs.
Stephen Braswell (Manchester, Pa./Northeastern) was second on the squad with 13 kills and 13 digs.
Daniel Ford (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) finished with a game-high 53 assist.
The score was tied at seven apiece before a service error by Lewis gave Saint Francis a one-point advantage at 8-7. The Flash want on a 4-0 run to take a 12-7 lead, forcing the Flyers to take their last timeout. A Ford service ace ended the set and match for the Flash, 15-8.
Lewis jumped out to an early 6-1 lead in the first set. The Flash cut the Flyers' lead to 10-8 on the kill by Ford. Saint Francis went on a 4-0 to gain a 16-15 advantage late in the set, and forced a Lewis timeout. The two teams would keep exchanging points late, but the Flash closed out the set on a 3-0 run to win, 26-24.
The second set started out like the first with Lewis opening with a lead, but the Flash came back and knotted the score at 5-5. The two teams would tie it up a few more times before SFU took a 12-9 lead. The Flyers stormed back and started pulling away. The Red Flash made a small run towards the end of the set but the Flyers ended up taking the second set, 25-21.
Much like the first and second set, the third set started off with both Lewis and Saint exchanging points. However, this time it last the entire set. The Red Flash scored the last two points to win, 25-23. The set featured 20 ties and 21 lead changes.
The Flyers opened the fourth set with 10-4 lead. The Flash trimmed the Flyers to 14-10, but Lewis would go on the control the rest of the set. A service error by the Red Flash gave the Flyers 25-17 win.
The Flash stay in Chicago to face Loyola University Chicago on Saturday at 7 p.m.
