NEW BRITAIN, Conn. – The Saint Francis men's basketball team used a methodical effort to earn a road victory at Central Connecticut, 79-64, on Saturday afternoon. Saint Francis was led by freshman
Isaiah Blackmon (Charlotte, N.C./West Charlotte)'s new season-high 20 points on 9-of-9 shooting. It's Saint Francis' first ever three-game road winning streak in Northeast Conference play.
Blackmon (9 points),
Ronnie Drinnon (Jamestown, Ohio/Greenview) (8),
Ben Millaud-Meunier (Montreal, Quebec/Vanier) (8) and
Malik Harmon (Queens, N.Y./Christ the King) (6) combined to score 31 of the Red Flash's 36 points in the first half. SFU had a 36-33 lead after a half that saw all five lead changes and all four ties in the game.Â
Dunks on back-to-back possessions early in the second half from
Josh Nebo (Katy, Texas/Cypress Lakes) pushed the lead to seven, but it wasn't until the Flash went on a 12-2 run over a five-plus minute stretch later in the half that it was able to distance itself from the Blue Devils. Ahead 44-41, SFU used a three pointer from Harmon and six makes on six free throws to push the lead into double figures at 53-51. After a CCSU bucket and a
Greg Brown (Odenton, Md./Archbishop Spalding) free throw, the Flash capped the run in style.
Harmon led a 4-on-1 break that ended with a dish to the trailing Blackmon for a vicious slam that made it 56-43 and effectively took the wind out of Central Connecticut's sails. The 15-point final spread turned out to be the largest of the game for the Flash.
Blackmon topped his previous season/career-high by a point with his 20. He had 19 in Thursday's win at Bryant. For the week, Blackmon scored his 39 points on an insanely efficient 17-of-19 (89.4 percent) from the field. He also matched his best rebounding performance of the year with seven rebounds on Saturday.
After missing his sixth-straight double-double on Thursday by just two rebounds, Drinnon was back on the wagon Saturday, tying his season high with 18 points while pulling down 10 rebounds. Harmon scored 15 points and Millaud-Meunier had 10.
The win helped the Flash reach back into the record book to erase some old numbers. Saint Francis swept a weekend road trip in NEC play for the first time since Feb. 2010 when SFU beat Bryant and Central Connecticut. Saturday's win is also SFU's third straight road win. It's the first time ever in NEC play that SFU won three straight conference road games. Overall, it's the Flash's first three-game road winning streak since 1980-1981.
The Red Flash won four in a row on the road in January 1981, and this year's team can match that feat in its next game. Saint Francis plays its return date at Fairleigh Dickinson on Thursday night at 7 p.m.
