Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Dan Griffin

Morales Strikes Twice as Flash Blank Blackbirds

Flash Points:
  • Gabi Morales (Madrid, Spain/Colegio La Inmaculada-Marillac) scored in each half to lead the offense
  • Julia Hernan (Pottstown, Pa./The Hill School) posted her third-straight clean sheet with four saves
  • SFU out shot LIU 12-4 in shots on goal and won their third straight

LORETTO, PA- Gabi Morales (Madrid, Spain/Colegio La Inmaculada-Marillac) scored twice and the Flash won their third-straight match by the same 2-0 score, defeating LIU Brooklyn on Sunday afternoon at the Stokes SoccerPlex.

"We needed players to step up, and they stepped up today," coach Brenda van Stralen said. "It is always good to keep getting wins in conference, especially when you can control the match like we did today."

Saint Francis out shot LIU 14-10 overall and 12-4 in shots on goal in the victory. The Red Flash pressured right from the jump on Saturday as Gabi Morales (Madrid, Spain/Colegio La Inmaculada-Marillac) and Alyssa McGhee (Altoona, Pa./Bishop Guilfoyle) each fired shots on goal in the early minutes. The SFU defense then stepped it up as LIU countered off the second save by keeper Aline Allmann. Shannon McGinnis (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) blocked an attempted shot out of bound, forcing a corner kick that the Red Flash cleared out with no issue. The Flash blocked three shots in the first half, as Hernan was forced to make two routine saves in the opening stanza.

In the final minutes of the half, the Red Flash continued their attack. Allison LaDuke (Greensburg, Pa./Greater Latrobe) found space in the LIU defense and crossed a pass onto the foot of Sara Suler (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory), Suler one-touched the ball to Gabi Morales (Madrid, Spain/Colegio La Inmaculada-Marillac) who found space in the far corner of the goal box. The junior ripped a shot into the top left corner and by a stunned Allmann to make it 1-0 Saint Francis. That would be the score heading into the half.

SFU continued to press in the second half and nearly made it 2-0 on a pair of occasions as Leah Hardin (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen) just missed high with a rising shot and Sara Suler (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) just missed wide on a header off a Morales corner. Morales would strike again in the 59th minute as LIU was called for a hand ball foul just outside the box along the far side. The junior bent a shot perfectly under the crossbar and over the out-stretched arm of Allmann to make it 2-0. The strike was Morales' third goal of the season.

With LIU looking to press for offense, the Red Flash were able to control the ball, preventing the Blackbirds from pressing. The Blackbirds eventually sold out on offense, desperate to generate chances. With LIU pressing up, Morales nearly completed the hat trick on a pair of opportunities including a breakaway in the 84th minute that forced a sprawling save from Allmann to keep it 2-0. Hernan stepped up and made two saves, including a diving stop in the 86th minute. The sophomore keeper cleared the ball back out to the midfield and neither team threatened over the final minutes.

SFU's third-straight win moves them to 3-1 in the NEC and 5-10 overall. LIU falls to 1-13 on the season and 0-5 in NEC play. SFU is on the road next weekend for a pair of matches as they take on Sacred Heart on Friday and Bryant on Sunday. Match time between the Red Flash and the Pioneers is set for 3 p.m.
