Flash and Knights Play to 1-1 Draw

Flash Points:
  • Dominic Ramirez (Johnstown, Pa./Westmont Hilltop) scored the equalizer in the 74th mintue
  • Marcus Rojas (Fremont, Calif./Bellarmine College Preparatory) made a pair of saves in the match
  • SFU out shot FDU 30-15

TEANECK, N.J-  Stefan Sjekloca (Belgrade, Serbia/Fryeburg Academy) fed Dominic Ramirez (Johnstown, Pa./Westmont Hilltop) in the 74th minute for the equalizer and the Flash with stood an early charge from an upstart FDU Knights squad, earning a 1-1 draw on Friday night.

The Knights came out strong in the match, firing a pair of shots just wide of goal in the early minutes. FDU jumped on top 1-0 in the eighth minute as Enver Caymaz finished off a crossing pass with a shot that just trickled over the line to make it 1-0. The Flash looked to counter back but shots from Brendan McGhee (Pickering, Ontario, Canada/St. Mary's Catholic) and Nick Hanuscin (Cinnaminson, N.J./Bishop Eustace) were stopped by Julian Toro. FDU nearly made it 2-0 in the 23rd minute as Caymaz got by Marcus Rojas (Fremont, Calif./Bellarmine College Preparatory) and had a clear shot on an empty goal before Jack Webber (Bernville, Pa./Tulpehocken) cleared the shot off the goal line to keep it a 1-0 contest. SFU turned up the intensity in the final minutes of the half, firing off four shots in the final 10 minutes, but couldn't find their mark. It would go to the intermission 1-0 FDU.

Francis deVries nearly tied the match on a pair of occasions, missing just high on one shot and was denied by a sprawling Toro off a set piece on another. SFU kept peppering the Knights' goal with shots all half long but could not find the equalizer. That changed at the 73:26 mark as Sjekloca hooked a cross onto the foot of Ramirez who one-timed it by Toro to knot the match at a goal each. SFU kept threatening to get the go-ahead goal, firing six shots off in the final 15 minutes, but could not find that elusive second tally. It would go to extra time tied at a goal apiece.

Despite out shooting FDU 8-0 in the 20 minutes of extra time, the Flash could not score the golden goal and settled for the draw with each team earning a point. SFU now sits at 2-1-1 in NEC play with FDU is 1-1-2. Saint Francis continues their road swing on Sunday, as they head to Bryant to face the Bulldogs who defeated Robert Morris 3-0 on Friday. Match time is set for noon.
