SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Saint Francis women's volleyball team fell in four sets to Bryant on Saturday. The Bulldogs took the match, 25-23, 25-21, 25-21 and 25-20.
Christa White (Rochester, N.Y./Spencerport) and
Breanna Opera (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster ) paced the Flash offense with 15 and 11 kills, respectively. Â
Amelia Metzler (Littleton, Colo./Chatfield) recorded a match-high 34 assists while
Jenna Veres (Independence, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) added 29 digs.
Sophia Esposito (Coraopolis, PA/Montour (Gardner-Webb)) tallied seven total blocks.
In the first set, the Flash looked to take control early, running out to a 9-7 lead. The rest of the set would be a back-and-fourth battle. With the score tied at 17-17, SFU would take a 19-17 lead thanks to kills from
Kelsey Roush (Johnstown, Pa./Richland) and Opera. The Bulldogs would close out the set on a 3-1 run and prevailed 25-23.
Two
Christa White (Rochester, N.Y./Spencerport) kills helped Saint Francis jump out to an early 5-0 second-set lead and forced Bryant to call a timeout. Â The Bulldogs rattled off five unanswered points to pull within one at 12-11. SFU would take a 16-14 lead midway through the set. A Bryant attack error broke up a Bulldog run and would give Saint Francis a 20-19 advantage. Out of a Bryant timeout, the Bulldogs answered with a 3-0 run to give them a 22-20 lead. BU won six of the last seven points to win the set 25-21.
Bryant jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the third set. The Flash responded, with four-straight points to take a 4-3 lead. A
Sophie Murdock (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion ) kill would give SFU an 11-9 lead, but Bryant would win the next three points to put the Bulldogs ahead 12-11. Saint Francis used another 3-0 run to make it 18-17. Two attack errors and a White kill finished off the Bulldogs 25-21.
In a fourth set that featured a number of runs, it was Bryant who would take an early 10-6 lead. The Red Flash would fight back to tie the set at 12-12. The Bulldogs ripped off three points to take a commanding 20-14 lead. Saint Francis would rally back, getting to within two but Bryant would score the last two points to take the set and match 25-20.
Saint Francis returns to action tomorrow against CCSU. Match time is set for 3 p.m.
