Lorenzo Jerome (Sunrise, Fla./J.P. Taravella) was selected NEC Defensive Player of the Week on Monday for his performance in the Red Flash's 52-10 win over Malone on Saturday.

Jerome had a major impact on the SFU defense on Saturday, with a team-best nine tackles, including four solo, a sack, an interception, two pass breakups and a QB hurry.

The Florida native helped the Red Flash defense to hold Malone to just 10 points and 183 total yards. The Pioneers gained only 119 passing yards and 68 rushing yards. They averaged three yards per play.

Saint Francis has held three straight opponents to 20 or less points and 120 or less passing yards.

One of Jerome's biggest plays of the day came in the fourth quarter, when he made a diving catch on an interception on a pass tipped by
Solomon Leaeno (Kapolei, Hawaii/James Campbell). The pick, Jerome's fourth of the season, setup SFU at the Malone 28 and led to an SFU touchdown to go up 38-10.Â

Jerome is tied for the FCS lead in interceptions this season as one of five players with four picks. Jerome is already the career leader among active FCS players with 16 interceptions.

The senior provided strong help in the against Malone's option rushing attack, with five tackles holding Malone to three or less yards. He also had a hit on a third down screen pass to hold the Pioneers to no gain.

Jerome added a QB hurry in the first quarter and a key sack in the second quarter to push Malone out of field goal range.

On the year, Jerome is second on the team with 36 tackles, including 17 solo, two for loss and a sack. He has led the team in tackles in three games. He also has three pass breakups and a fumble recovery, which he returned 89 yards for a score at Towson, to go with his four interceptions.

The Red Flash begins NEC play this Saturday with a 3 p.m. kickoff at Robert Morris. The game will be broadcasted on ESPN3.
