LORETTO, PA-Â Abby Tarosky scored in the eighth minute and
Gabi Morales (Madrid, Spain/Colegio La Inmaculada-Marillac) posted a goal and an assist as Saint Francis shutout Mount Saint Mary's 2-0 for their second NEC win of the weekend.Â
"Always nice to pick up wins in conference, this one keeps us in the race," coach
Brenda van Stralen said. "I liked how composed we were today and how we controlled the match, we also showed some good leadership on the field today."
Tarosky took a feed from
Gabi Morales (Madrid, Spain/Colegio La Inmaculada-Marillac) and chipped it into the top corner of an open net to give SFU the early 1-0 lead. The Mountaineer defense collapsed on Morales who sprung free off a long pass from
Sara Suler (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory). The junior drew in the defense as well as the keeper and found Tarosky for the goal.Â
Saint Francis controlled the match and dominated the possession in the opening stanza. The Red Flash out shot the Mount 15-3 in the first half including 10-1 in shots on goal. SFU peppered the Mountaineer back line and keeper Maddie Bunnell with shots all half long. They nearly made it 2-0 in the 20th minute when
Alyssa McGhee (Altoona, Pa./Bishop Guilfoyle) got free and fired a shot that Bunnell just got a piece of to deflect over the cross bar. Morales had four shots on goal in the first half to go along with her assist but could not find the net. The Red Flash would leave 1-0 at the half.Â
Leah Hardin (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen) had two good chances in the early stages of the second half, she deflected a corner kick just wide of the goal in the 54th minute and was denied by Bunnell on a second shots, just minutes later. The SFU defense bottled up the Mountaineer offense as they were pushing for an equalizer. The Mount had a pair of shots blocked in the early part of the half and Hernan made one of her three saves on a deflection following a corner kick. The Red Flash made it 2-0 in the 71st minute as again Suler sent a long pass that this time freed up
Alyssa McGhee (Altoona, Pa./Bishop Guilfoyle). The freshman made an inside move and found Morales at the top of the six-yard box and the junior buried it into the corner for her first goal of the season. The Flash kept attacking after finding the insurance goal and nearly made it 3-0 on a pair of occasions, but settled for their second 2-0 win of the weekend.Â
Saint Francis out shot Mount Saint Mary's 24-8 overall and 15-4 in shots on goal.
Julia Hernan (Pottstown, Pa./The Hill School) made those four saves to earn her second-straight clean sheet. The win moves the Red Flash to 2-1 in NEC play and 4-10 overall while Mount Saint Mary's is 4-7-1 overall and 0-2 in the NEC. They will go for their third-straight conference win next Sunday when they host LIU Brooklyn in their Soccer Without Borders match. Match time is set for noon and is the first game of a double header between the schools.Â
