Golden Eagles Fly Away From Flash in Second Half

Flash Points:
  • Jessica Kovatch (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) led six players in double figures with 20 points
  • Ace Harrison (Baltimore, MD/Digital Harbor (Maryland)) narrowly missed a triple double with 17 points 9 rebounds and 7 assists
  • Allazia Blockton had a game-high 24 for Marquette

MILWAUKEE, WI- Jessica Kovatch (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) had 20 points, leading six players in double figures but the Marquette Golden Eagles erased a four-point halftime deficit in a 104-91 setback for Saint Francis on Tuesday night at Al McGuire Center.

Saint Francis led by as many as 12 in the first half and held a 55-51 halftime lead but connected on just 35 percent of their shots in the second half. The Red Flash came out red hot in the first quarter, hitting three of their first four threes as they built an early lead. Cydney Smith (Port Tobacco, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) hit the fifth three of the quarter for the Flash to take a 19-16 lead midway through the quarter. After forcing a Marquette turnover, Katie Reese (Boonton Township, N.J./Mountain Lakes (Manhattan)) connected from distance again as the lead grew to six. Saint Francis traded baskets with the Eagles until the final minute of the opening quarter when Courtney Zezza (Plum, Pa./Plum) hit five-straight points and Kovatch got a steal and score as Saint Francis led by as many as 11 in the opening quarter and led 36-27 after the first ten minutes.

Halee Adams (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Bishop Guilfoyle (Sienna)) hit another three out of the gate in the second quarter as the Flash hit their high-water mark with a 39-27 lead. Marquette would counter with a 9-0 run of their own to close the SFU lead to three. A pair of Harrison free throws ended the run but Marquette would take the lead on a layup by Amani Wilborn. The teams would battle back-and-forth for the rest of the half with neither side leading by more than four. Saint Francis would end the half on a small 5-1 run fueled by a Harrison lay-in and a Reese three as they took a 55-51 lead into the locker room.

The Golden Eagles would score the first four points of the second half to quickly tie the game before the Flash responded with a 6-0 run to lead 61-55. The game of runs would continue as Marquette scored the next five to re-tie the game. The teams would trade baskets until it was knotted at 66 when Marquette surged ahead with another 6-0 run. They would maintain the advantage the rest of the quarter and a late bucket put the Eagles up 82-73 heading into the final frame.

Saint Francis went cold in the fourth quarter, going scorless until the 5:26 mark when Cydney Smith (Port Tobacco, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) hit a jumper. That cold streak was the turning point in the game as Marquette opened up an 18 point lead. Saint Francis kept up the pressure and intensity on both ends of the floor and was able to trim the lead to 11 but simply ran out of time. Kovatch ended the Red Flash scoring with a three-point play. That gave her 20 points on the night and marked the 21st time in her young career that she's scored at least 20.

Allazia Blockton led all scorers with 24  and led five Eagles in double figures. Kovatch's 20 led six Saint Francis' players in double figures. Erika Davenport led the Eagles with a game-high 11 rebounds. Ace Harrison (Baltimore, MD/Digital Harbor (Maryland)) had nine to lead SFU but Marquette owned a 45-36 edge on the glass and a 15-11 advantage on second-chance points.

Saint Francis drops to 1-1 on the season while Marquette is 2-0. The Red Flash will head back to the friendly confines of DeGol Arena for a three-game homestand. First up are the Columbia Lions on Saturday who are in town for a 4 p.m. tip.
