LORETTO, PA- Ace Harrison (Baltimore, MD/Digital Harbor (Maryland))'s 26 points 9 rebounds and 8 steals were not enough as the Flash went ice cold from the field in the second half in a 84-77 setback to the Columbia Lions on Saturday afternoon.
Saint Francis led 46-36 at the half but shot just 33 percent in the second half, prompting the Lions' comeback.
Katie Reese (Boonton Township, N.J./Mountain Lakes (Manhattan)) got off to a hot start, hitting two straight shots as SFU started the game on a 7-0 run. The Lions responded with seven straight of their own, setting the tone for a game of runs. After trading the next 14 points, the Flash ripped off another 7-0 run on the back of another Reese three and a
Jessica Kovatch (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) bucket put SFU up 21-14, and the Flash would lead 21-16 after 10 minutes.
Columbia would chip away at the lead in the early minutes of the second quarter, getting two within two at 31-29 at the under five media timeout. The Flash ripped off 9 straight points as SFU forced four-straight turnovers from the Lions and lead by 11 at 40-29, their largest lead of the half.
Ace Harrison (Baltimore, MD/Digital Harbor (Maryland)) hit on consecutive possessions and a pair of
Samiah Bethel (Jacksonville, Fla./Potter's House Christian Academy) free throws closed the half for the Flash as they led 46-36 heading into the locker room.
An and-one from
Jessica Kovatch (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) gave the Flash their largest lead of the game at 51-39 on the second possession of the second half. A
Courtney Zezza (Plum, Pa./Plum) lay-up at the 7:15 mark put the Flash up 10 at 53-43. The Flash went cold over the next six minutes, going scoreless as Columbia reeled off a 18-0 run during the stretch to take a 61-53 lead. A pair of Harrison jumpers broke the streak and Reese chipped in a bucket but the Lions flipped the script of the game in the quarter and led 65-59 after three.
In the fourth, threes by Kovatch and
Maya Wynn (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh) got the Flash to within three on a pair of occasions early, but Columbia always seemed to have an answer. Alexa Giuliano hit threes on consecutive possessions for Columbia to extend their lead and prevent Saint Francis from tying the score. Giuliano's second three opened up a five-point lead for the Lions and the Flash could not get any closer. Harrison scored on three consecutive possessions down the stretch but the Lions hit 16 of 17 free throws in the second half and put the game on ice.
Columbia out rebounded the Flash 51-32 but the Flash owned an 11-10 edge on second-chance points. Columbia overcame 27 turnovers and the Flash's 30 points off those miscues in the victory. Aside from Harrison's 26, Reese had 19 points and Kovatch added 12. Defensively,
Courtney Zezza (Plum, Pa./Plum) had six of the team's 11 blocks while Harrison added 8 steals. For Columbia, Tori Oliver led the way with 23 while Camille Zimmerman had 20 points and 17 rebounds.
