LORETTO, Pa. – The Saint Francis men's basketball team welcomes Longwood to DeGol Arena on Wednesday night. The Red Flash and Lancers are set for a 7 p.m. tipoff on NEC Front Row, with Pat Farabaugh on play-by-play and Bernie Jubeck on color.
The Red Flash, led by Head Coach Rob Krimmel, picked up its first win of the season on Saturday, a 119-59 victory over Chatham, to improve to 1-2 on the year.
The Lancers are also 1-2, coming off an 87-74 win over Salem International on Friday.
NOTES FROM CHATHAM
- Sophomore guard Andre Wolford (Willowick, Ohio/Saint Ignatius) had a career-high 17 points off the bench to lead six Saint Francis players in double figures. He went 7-of-10 from the field, including three three's, and added two blocks.
- Senior guard Georgios Angelou (Halkida, Greece/Lykeio Kanithou) and sophomore guard Isaiah Blackmon (Charlotte, N.C./West Charlotte) each contributed 14 points. Twelve of Angelou's 14 came from three-range, while he added a career-high nine assists.
- Keith Braxton (Glassboro, N.J./The Lawrenceville School) had 13 points, while Josh Nebo (Houston, Texas/Cypress Lakes) recorded 12 points and Jamaal King (Salisbury, Md./Bishop O'Connell (Va.)) posted 10 points.
- SFU outscored Chatham, 65-26, in the second half, shooting almost 65 percent from the field and 68 percent from three-point range.
- The Red Flash hit 19 three's, the third-most in any Division I game this year, and recorded 30 assists, the sixth-most in a DI game this season.
SERIES HISTORY
This is the first meeting between Saint Francis and Longwood, a Big South conference team, located in Farmville, Virginia.
NEBO'S BLOCK PARTY
The sophomore forward has become a force at the rim, both protecting it and rebounding. Nebo posted 59 blocks in his freshman campaign. He added two blocks against both Duquesne and Chatham. His 63 career blocks are already good for eighth on the all-time list at SFU, one away from tying Will Felder (2009-11) for seventh place.
Nebo has been strong on the glass so far this year, including a career-high 16 rebounds at Duquesne. He is 33rd in the nation in rebounds per game, averaging 10.
BOMBS AWAY
Saint Francis hit nine threes against St. Bonaventure, 10 against Duquesne and 19 vs. Chatham. The Red Flash currently leads the nation with a 51.4 three-point percentage and ranks third in the NCAA, averaging 12.7 three-pointers made per game. SFU's 19 against Chatham are the third-most in a Division I game this year.
Senior Georgios Angelou (Halkida, Greece/Lykeio Kanithou) has hit a team-best 10 threes this year and ranks 23rd in the NCAA with a 58.8 three-point percentage. King has hit six three's, Blackmon has five three's, while Braxton, sophomore Scott Meredith (Pilot Mountain, N.C./Hargrave Military Academy (Va.)) and Wolford both have four three's each.
BALANCED ATTACK
Saint Francis has placed six players in double-figures in the 119-59 win over Chatham. The Red Flash has put at least four players in double-figures in each game this season. SFU had five in double-figures in the opener at Saint Bonaventure and four in the loss at Duquesne.
Nebo (13.3), Angelou (12), King (11), Blackmon (11), Wolford (11) and Braxton (10) are all averaging double digits through three games, while Randall Gaskins Jr. is close behind, averaging nine points per contest.
DROPPING DIMES
Boosted by a 30-assist performance against Chatham, the Red Flash is 10th in the nation in assists per game, averaging 21. SFU has at least 15 assists in each game. With 63 total assists, SFU is assisting on 66.3 percent of its made shots. Angelou leads the team with five assists per game and King is averaging 3.7.
YOUNG TEAM
Eleven of the eighteen players on the Saint Francis roster are freshman or sophomore eligibility.
Of the 13 players who appeared in a game so far this year, 10 are freshmen or sophomores.
Through three games, the group has combined 221 of the team's 276 points (80.1 percent) and 463 of 600 minutes (77.1 percent).
TEAM CAPTAINS
Senior guard Georgios Angelou (Halkida, Greece/Lykeio Kanithou), sophomore guard Jamaal King (Salisbury, Md./Bishop O'Connell (Va.)) and sophomore forward Josh Nebo (Houston, Texas/Cypress Lakes) were selected as team captains for the 2016-17 season.
Angelou is one of three seniors on the roster and will move into a bigger role this season after being a key contributor off the bench last season. He led SFU with a 47.4 three-point percentage, while averaging 3.6 points and a rebound per game in 2015-16.
King will look to provide leadership at the point guard position. After joining the team in Mid-December last year, King played in 17 games, including a start at Mount St. Mary's. He averaged nine minutes per game and totaled 35 points, 12 rebounds, 10 assists and five steals.
Nebo started 29 games last year and made a big impact, especially on the boards and at the rim. He recorded 59 blocks, the second-most in a season at SFU, and already ranks ninth on the career blocks list at SFU. Nebo was second in the NEC, averaging 1.87 blocks per game. He averaged 4.9 points and 5.1 rebounds, while totaling six double-digit scoring performances and three games with double-digit rebounds. He also had 10 games with three or more blocks.
ABOUT THE LANCERS
Longwood is 1-2 on the season, with an 87-74 win over Salem International and losses against Maine (80-58) and Stephen F. Austin (66-60).
In the win over Salem International, the Lancers placed four players in double-figures. Junior forward Khris Lane led the team with a career-best 26 points, 12-of-15 from the field, and added 14 rebounds. Darrion Allen contributed 16 points, while Isaiah Walton added 12 and Bryan Gee had 10. Longwood shot 48 percent from the field and out-rebounded Salem International, 39-32.
Lane is averaging 16 points and eight rebounds per game, leading the Lancers in both categories. Allen, a senior guard, is averaging 15 points and six boards per game, while Walton, a sophomore guard, is contributing 14 points and 3.6 assists per contest.
