Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Dan Griffin

Records Fall in Red Flash Loss to South Florida

Flash Points:
  • Saint Francis set a school record for threes made in a game
  • Jessica Kovatch (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) set a school record for threes made
  • Kovatch set a career high with 37 points

TAMPA, FLA.- Saint Francis broke a pair of school records on Wednesday but a hot shooting South Florida Bulls team proved too much in a 129-80 setback on Wednesday night in the Sun Dome.

Saint Francis broke the school record with 19 made threes on Wednesday night. The previous high was 17, set on three different occasions, most recently against Fairleigh Dickinson on January 18th, 2016. Also falling was record for threes in a game by an individual as Jess Kovatch connected on nine triples on Wednesday. That bested the record of eight, set four times most recently by Kovatch herself against Canisius last season.

However, South Florida was white hot on Wednesday night, shooting 66 percent from the field as a team. They set the tone early as they hit on five of their first six shots to score the game's first 10 points and 17 of the first 20. The Flash used the three ball to climb back into the game in the first quarter. Threes by Reese and Kovatch paced the offense, who scored 18 of their first 20 points from beyond the arc. SFU slowed down the USF attack, held them scoreless over a three-minute stretch and ran off eight-straight points to make it 32-20. The Bulls would get a pair of lay-ups late to lead 37-20 after 10 minutes.

A couple of buckets from Kovatch got the Flash started in the second quarter before the Bulls ran off 14 consecutive points over a three-minute stretch to force a SFU timeout. A pair of threes from Caitlin Carroll (Middletown, New Jersey/Red Bank Catholic) stopped the run as the freshman provided a spark on both ends of the court on Wednesday night. She finished with six points and two rebounds in 10 minutes of action. The Bulls continued to use their size and speed to hit at a high clip and a late Reese three was set up by a nice Taylor Allison (State College, Pa./State College) pass to make it 70-43 at the half.

The second half proved to copy the first as the Flash hit an additional eight threes but could not overcome the Bulls size and athleticism. Defensively, SFU recorded six blocks to keep up with their season average, led by a pair from Courtney Zezza (Plum, Pa./Plum). The Flash also forced 13 turnovers, led by six steals including three by Maya Wynn (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh). But the big story was the Bulls ability to get to the basket, out scoring Saint Francis 62-16 in the paint en route to the most points against the Flash in school history. Seven Bulls reached double figures while the Flash got a career-best 37 from Kovatch and 19 from Reese. The sophomore was 13-30 from the field and added three rebounds and an assist.

The loss puts the Flash at 3-5 on the season while USF improves to 8-0. SFU heads to Boca Raton next to participate in the Florida Atlantic Holiday tournament. First up are the Hawks of Maryland Eastern Shore on Friday night. Tip time is set for around 7:30 p.m. from FAU Arena, following the game between the host Owls and Jackson State.
