LORETTO, Pa. – The Saint Francis Men's Basketball team fell 73-70 against Binghamton on Saturday night at DeGol Arena. The Red Flash placed four players in double-figures, including a career-high 22 points from sophomore guard
Jamaal King (Salisbury, Md./Bishop O'Connell (Va.)). SFU dropped to 3-4 on the year, while Binghamton improved to 6-4.
The Bearcats' Yosef Yacob hit two go-ahead free throws to put Binghamton ahead, 71-70, with 15 seconds to go. After an offensive foul by Saint Francis, Binghamton's J.C. Show hit two more free throws to push the lead to three. SFU turned the ball over on its final possession as Binghamton held on for the win.
Saint Francis shot 47.5 percent (28-of-59) for the game and shot 33 percent from three (5-of-15), including shooting 51.6 percent (16-of-31) in the second half.
The Red Flash was led by King's 22 points, on 8-of-15 shooting. King added three rebounds and three assists. Sophomore guard
Isaiah Blackmon (Charlotte, N.C./West Charlotte) added 18 points, four rebounds and two steals off the bench.
Freshman guard
Keith Braxton (Glassboro, N.J./The Lawrenceville School) contributed 16 points, hitting seven-of-eight shots, and nine rebounds, while sophomore forward
Josh Nebo (Houston, Texas/Cypress Lakes) posted his second double-double of the season, with 12 points and 14 rebounds.
Binghamton shot 46.4 percent (26-of-56) for the game, including 47.8 percent (11-of-23) from three. The Bearcats got hot in the second half, hitting 61.5 percent (16-of-26) of its shots.
Bobby Ahearn led the Bearcats with 19 points, going 8-of-11 from the field, and four rebounds. J.C. Show added 15 points, including three three's, while Yosef Yacob had 12 points off the bench.
With the Flash leading 9-5 in the opening minutes of the first half, Binghamton used a 12-2 run to jump out to a 17-11 lead. King scored seven of Saint Francis' first 11 points. A Blackmon layup ended a four-minute scoreless drought for SFU to pull the Flash within four at 17-13.
The Bearcats would continue to control the game, taking a 25-16 lead with just over six minutes remaining in the half. Saint Francis used an 18-0 run to close out the half. The run was sparked by a
Blackmon three with 4:33 to go in the half. Blackmon scored seven points during the run. Braxton drilled a three before time expired to give SFU a 34-24 lead heading into the half.
King led the Red Flash with 12 points in the first half, hitting three-of-six shots, with two rebounds and three assists. Blackmon and Braxton each added nine points.
A short 7-0 run by Saint Francis early in the second half extended its lead to 14, 45-31, with 15:55 left in the second half. King started the run with a layup. Braxton added a layup and completed a three-point play with a free throw. On the next Binghamton possession, Braxton stole the ball and got a dunk on the other end to finish the run.
The Red Flash added a 9-3 run later in the half to push its lead to 15, 56-41 with 11:23 left, its largest lead of the half. Blackmon had five points during the run, while
Scott Meredith (Pilot Mountain, N.C./Hargrave Military Academy (Va.)) hit a floater just outside of the lane and Nebo added a pair of free throws.
However, Binghamton answered with a 16-4 run over the next 4:46 to cut the Red Flash lead to three, 60-57, with 6:37 remaining. Ahearn scored eight of the Bearcats' 16 points during the run, with Fard Muhammad adding three and Yacob and Timmy Rose each adding a bucket.
Two baskets by Blackmon and one by Nebo helped push SFU's lead back to five, 66-61, with 3:36 left in the game.
After a layup by King to give SFU a 70-66 lead with 48 seconds left, Binghamton's Show answered with a three with 36 seconds to go to cut the lead to one, 70-69.
On the following SFU possession, Yacob stole the ball from King and drew a foul to go to the line. The junior guard converted the free throws to push Binghamton ahead, 71-70, with 15 seconds to go. After a charge foul was called on Blackmon, Show hit two free throws to extend Binghamton's lead to three. SFU's in-bounds pass following the free throw was stolen by Ahearn to seal the win for the Bearcats.
The Red Flash returns to action on Monday, December 12, when it travels to Lehigh for a 7 p.m. tipoff. The Mountain Hawks are 3-4 this season after a 64-58 win over Robert Morris on Saturday.
