BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Saint Francis men's basketball team fell 100-67 at Lehigh on Monday night in Stabler Arena. Lehigh got hot in the second half, shooting 62 percent from the floor and out-scoring SFU 55-31. The Red Flash dropped to 3-5 on the season, while Lehigh improved to 5-5.
Lehigh is the first team to score 100 points on Saint Francis since North Carolina had 103 on January 2, 2011.
Sophomore guard
Isaiah Blackmon (Charlotte, N.C./West Charlotte) led the Red Flash with 13 points on the night, hitting four-of-eight shots, and added six rebounds, two assists and two steals. Sophomore forward
Josh Nebo (Houston, Texas/Cypress Lakes) contributed 10 points, six rebounds and two blocks.
With his two blocks, Nebo now has 72 for his career, moving him into sixth place all-time at Saint Francis, passing Jason Osborne (2001-05). He is now just two blocks away from tying Reggie Lewis (1989-94) for fifth all-time at SFU.
Sophomore guard
Jamaal King (Salisbury, Md./Bishop O'Connell (Va.)) and freshman guard Randall Gaskins Jr. each contributed nine points, with King adding five rebounds and three assists, while Gaskins had two steals.
Saint Francis shot 35.8 percent from the floor, hitting 24-of-67 shots, and 22.7 percent from three (5-of-22).
Lehigh shot 55.9 percent for the game (38-of-68), including a blistering 61.8 percent in the second half (21-of-34). The Mountain Hawks hit 15-of-31 threes (48.4 percent), including 10 in the second half.
Freshman Pat Andree led Lehigh with 30 points, hitting 10-of-12 threes, and eight rebounds. Senior center Tim Kempton posted a double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds and senior guard Austin Price also contributed 21 points. Sophomore guard Kyle Leufroy added 13 points.
The Red Flash trailed 45-36 at halftime. Blackmon, freshman Gaskins Jr. and Nebo each had seven points in the half. Blackmon added four rebounds and two steals, while Gaskins also had two steals and Nebo had three boards and a block. Sophomore
Scott Meredith (Pilot Mountain, N.C./Hargrave Military Academy (Va.)) had six points on a pair of threes. SFU shot 44 percent in the half, hitting 15-of-34 attempts, including 4-of-11 from three.
Saint Francis scored six of the game's first eight points on jumpers by Nebo and King as well as a layup by Gaskins off a steal.
However, Lehigh climbed to a 21-11 lead on a 15-3 run later in the half. Andree hit three three's for Lehigh, while Leufroy added four points and Jordan Cohen contributed a layup.
A 7-2 run by SFU brought the game within four, 30-26, with 5:05 to go in the half. The run started on a jumper by Blackmon. Gaskins completed a three-point play, converting a layup through contact and then hitting a free throw. Braxton added a layup off a steal-and-assist by Blackmon.
A layup by Kempton pushed the Lehigh lead to 35-26 with 4:32 left. However, SFU answered with an 8-2 run, capped by a Blackmon layup to cut the Lehigh lead to three, 37-34, with 3:08 to go in the half. Meredith hit a couple threes during the run.
Lehigh responded with its own 8-2 run to close the half, with six points by Kempton and a jumper by Leufroy.
After the teams traded baskets to start the second half, Lehigh broke the game open with a 20-2 run to take a 74-48 lead with 11:38 to go, ended on a jumper by freshman
Deivydas Kuzavas (Kretinga, Lithuania/St. Mary's Ryken (Md.)). The Mountain Hawks' run was aided by two threes by Andree, six points by Price and four by Cohen.
A 15-2 run by Lehigh pushed its lead to 89-53 with 6:54 left. Andree hit two more threes, with Matt Holba and Price each adding a three and Kempton completing a three-point play after being fouled on a layup.
SFU scored 14 of the game's last 25 points, with four by sophomore
Jordan Forehand (Bridgewater, N.J./IMG Academy (Fla.)), who made his first appearance in a game this year for the Red Flash. Junior
Deon Baker (Pittsburgh,Pa/Gateway) and Blackmon each added a layup, while
Jamaal King (Salisbury, Md./Bishop O'Connell (Va.)),
Patrick Wrencher (West Chester, Ohio/Archbishop Moeller) and
Andre Wolford (Willowick, Ohio/Saint Ignatius) each hit two free throws.
The Red Flash returns to DeGol Arena on Saturday, December 17 as it hosts Stony Brook for a 1 p.m. tipoff. The game will be broadcast on NEC Front Row with
Pat Farabaugh, play-by-play, and
Bernie Jubeck, color analyst, on the call. The Seawolves are 3-6 this season.
