Women's Lacrosse Falls on the Road to Winthrop, 16-7

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Saint Francis women's lacrosse lost to the Winthrop Eagles, 16-7, on Sunday night at Eagle Field.

With the loss, the Flash fall to 1-1 on the season, while the Eagles improve to 5-0.

Christina Fini (Huntington, N.Y./Smithtown East) and Holly Lawrence (Damascus, Md./Damascus) led the Flash with two goals apiece. Sarah Mahon (Malverne, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial), Jessica Fischetti (Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) and Lindsay Ingram (Stewartstown, Pa./York Catholic) also each added a goal in the game. Lawrence led SFU with four draw controls, while Ingram had three ground balls. The Eagles had four players' record hat-tricks in the win.

Winthrop started the game scoring at the 28:32 mark. A Fischetti goal sparked a scoring run for the Flash as they rattled off three straight goals to jump ahead, 3-1. Winthrop scored two unanswered goals to tie the score at 3-3.

The Flash retook the lead at 4-3, thanks to a goal by Ingram at the 16:46 mark. After a 10-minute scoring draught, the Eagles scored to tie it up at 4-4. Thirty-three seconds later, Winthrop scored to take a 5-4 lead. With less than five minutes to play, the Eagles then strung together three consecutive goals to head into the half with 8-4 advantage.

The Eagles scored at the 26:06 mark to open the second period, before Mahon found the back of the net. Winthrop went on to score three goals in under two minutes to take a 12-5 lead with 17:52 to play. The Eagles went on to score two more goals only 19 seconds apart to lead 14-5.

Mahon struck again for her second goal of the match, with Winthrop leading 14-6. Two more were put on the board for the Eagles, before Lawrence scored the final goal of the match off a free position attempt with less than two minutes to play.

Saint Francis looks to bounce back against Furman on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
