FAIRFAX, Va. – Redshirt junior
Ketarah DeVries (Forreston, Ill./Forreston) threw a No-Hitter as the Saint Francis softball team earned a five-inning, mercy-rule win over Cornell, 13-0, on Saturday at the Cherry Blossom Classic, hosted by George Mason. The Red Flash tallied eight hits and drew 12 walks. SFU is now 15-12 this season and won its sixth straight game.
The Red Flash's second game of the day, vs. George Mason, was cancelled. Saint Francis finished the Cherry Blossom Classic with a 3-0 record.DeVries was part of a No-Hitter for the second time this season. She combined with junior
Ethel Santai (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove Area) for a No-Hitter in the Red Flash's season-opening win over UNC Wilmington. It is the first one-pitcher no-hitter Laura Caldwell did it on April 14, 2008 vs. Central Connecticut State in a 1-0 win.
DeVries allowed only one baserunner, a walk in the first inning, while striking out six batters. After a one-out walk in the first, DeVries retired the next 14 batters, including five strikeouts, four flyouts, two popouts, two foulouts and a lineout. DeVries improved to 4-1 this year.
Meg Parker started the game and took the loss for Cornell. Parker pitched one inning, allowing five runs on four hits, while walking four. Maddie Orcutt replaced Parker, throwing two innings, while giving up four runs on one hit and six walks. Sierra Stone finished the game, pitching two innings, allowing four runs on three hits, with two walks and two strikeouts.
Freshmen
Hayley Norton (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove) and
Mikayla Bower (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport) each had two hits on the day, with Norton driving in four runs and Bower driving in two. Freshman
Sierra McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) and junior
Kindra Witthus (Hudson, Wis./Hudson) also drove in two runs and freshman
Cheyenne McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) and junior
Alexis Bower (Cogan Station, Pa./Williamsport Area) each had an RBI. Freshman
Kassidy Troxell (Navarre, Ohio/Perry) scored three runs. S. McKee, Troxell and Witthus each drew two walks.
The Red Flash got on the board first, with a run in the top of the first.
Sierra McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) hit a bloop single to right to leadoff the inning. McKee then stole second. Norton followed with a single up the middle to plate McKee and give SFU a 1-0 lead.
Saint Francis added four runs in the top of the second. SFU worked the bases loaded with a walk by Troxell, a single by
Mikayla Bower (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport) and a walk by Witthus to start the inning.
Cheyenne McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) followed with a single to right to score Troxell.
Sierra McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) then drew a walk to plate Bower. After a pitching change by Cornell, Norton worked a walk of her own to score Witthus. With the bases loaded and still no outs,
Alexis Bower (Cogan Station, Pa./Williamsport Area) hit a sacrifice fly to left to drive in C. McKee to give Saint Francis a 5-0 advantage.
SFU extended its lead to six runs in the top of the third. Troxell began the inning by lining a double to left center. Witthus drew another walk before
Cheyenne McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) reached on an error by the second baseman.
Sierra McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) followed by drawing a walk to allow Troxell to cross the plate.
The Red Flash drove in six more runs in the top of the fourth. With the bases loaded,
Mikayla Bower (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport) drew a walk to score pinch-runner
Kelsie Marconi (Lowber, Pa./Yough). A wild pitch then allowed Seneca to cross the plate. Witthus followed with a lined double to left to drive in Troxell and M. Bower. Three batters later, Norton launched a two-run homer to left-center, which also scored Witthus.
SFU added another run in the top of the fifth on a two-out double to right-center by
Mikayla Bower (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport) to score
McKenzie Burge (Osceola Mills, Pa./Phillipsburg-Osceola). The Red Flash held a 13-0 advantage.
