Women’s Tennis Shuts Out Wagner, 4-0

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. –The Saint Francis women's tennis team had a strong performance on Friday, shutting out Wagner, 5-0.  The Red Flash swept the singles and doubles action, only dropping one set in singles.  SFU improved to 5-13 overall and 2-0 in the NEC.  Wagner fell to 7-5 overall and 2-2 in conference play.
 
Senior Rafaela Panizza (Jundiai, Brazil) and junior Brittany Plaszewski (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) combined at the top doubles spot against Wagner's Marina Rull-Valvieso and Avika Sagwal.  The Red Flash duo posted a dominant, 6-0, performance for its seventh win at No. 1 this spring.
 
At the No. 2 doubles spot, freshman Raksha Bode (Reunion, Fla./Florida Virtual School) and senior Dani Gryckiewicz (Calgary, Alberta/Calgary Academy) matched up against Carolyn Gibson and Madison Pautsch.  The SFU pair earned a 6-2 victory for its fifth dual match win.
 
In the matchup at No. 3, junior Brittini Jentz (Plano, Texas/Ursuline Academy of Dallas) and freshman Stephanie Miller (Washington, D.C./St. John's College High School) took on Rina Baynes and Samantha Hodges.  Jentz and Miller completed the doubles sweep with a 6-3 win.  They are now 6-5 on the season.
 
Plaszewski competed against Rull-Valvieso at the No. 2 position.  Plaszewski earned a 6-2 win in the first set.  She dominated the second set, 6-0, to complete the sweep.  It was her sixth win of the spring.
 
Lining up at No. 3 was Bode and Wagner's Hodges.  After dropping the first set, 6-1, Bode responded with a 6-0 win in the second set.  In the deciding frame, Bode came out on top, 6-4, for her seventh dual match win.
 
Jentz faced the Seahawks' Baynes at No. 4.  The SFU junior took the opening set, 6-4.  She completed the sweep with a dominant 6-0 second set.  Jentz now has three wins this spring.
 
The matches at No. 1, 5 and 6 were stopped after the Red Flash clinched the match.  Miller was leading, 5-2, in the first set at No. 5 against Pautsch.  At No. 6, Gryckiewicz was leading the first set, 5-1, against Jenna Harris.
 
At the top spot, Panizza met the Seahawks' Sagwal.  The SFU senior claimed the first set, 6-3.  She was leading 6-5 in the second set when the match was stopped.

Saint Francis wraps up the regular season on Saturday.  The Red Flash plays St. Francis Brooklyn at 10 a.m. and Hofstra at 2 p.m.
