FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Saint Francis softball team swept its doubleheader on Saturday at Sacred Heart. The Red Flash won the first game, 6-1, totaling six hits. SFU earned an 11-2 win in the second game, with 12 hits. The Red Flash improved to 24-17 overall and 5-1 in the NEC. SFU is now 4-0 in NEC road games this season. The Pioneers dropped to 10-24-1, with a 1-5 mark in conference play.
In the first game, the Red Flash set a pair of single-season records.
Jordan Seneca (Plum, Pa./Plum) crossed the plate in the sixth inning on
Melanie Martire (Herndon, Va./Herndon)'s double for SFU's 256th run of the season. That passed the record held by the 2006 team.
On the same play, Saint Francis set another record with its 232nd RBI of the season to pass the 2006 team's mark of 231 RBI.
The Red Flash returns home for three doubleheaders this week at Red Flash Softball Field. Saint Francis welcomes Bucknell on Tuesday for a twinbill, starting at 3 p.m. On Saturday, SFU hosts Bryant at 1 p.m. for an NEC doubleheader. On Sunday, the Red Flash takes on Mount St. Mary's on Senior Day, with first pitch at Noon. SFU will celebrate Senior Day against The Mount.
First Game
Junior
Ethel Santai (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove Area) threw a complete game, including six shutout frames, to earn the win. Santai allowed only one run on five hits. She struck out seven and walked none. At one point, Santai retired 13 straight batters. She only allowed more than one baserunner in the first and seventh innings.
Jamie Carlson started for Sacred Heart and threw six innings. She allowed five runs, three earned, on four hits, while striking out eight and walking four. Adrianna Mallory pitched the final inning, giving up a run on two hits and striking out one.
Sophomore
Madison Cabell (Ivor, Va./Southampton) had two hits, in three at-bats, and drove in a run. Freshman
Sierra McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) homered, while fellow rookie
Melanie Martire (Herndon, Va./Herndon) added an RBI double.
McKenna Wiegand had a double for Sacred Heart, while Chloe Weeks had the Pioneers' lone RBI.
The Red Flash got on the board in the top of the third.
Kindra Witthus (Hudson, Wis./Hudson) led off the inning by drawing a walk. Witthus promptly stole second. Two batters later, McKee flew out to right, allowing Witthus to move up to third. A passed ball during
Hayley Norton (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove)'s at-bat allowed Witthus to cross the plate, giving SFU a 1-0 lead.
Saint Francis extended its lead to 2-0 in the top of the fifth. Martire reached on a walk to start the inning. Pinch-runner
Kate Blattenberger (Martinsburg, Pa./Central) then stole second during Witthus' at-bat. With
Cheyenne McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) batting, Blattenberger stole third. Later in the at-bat, Blattenberger scored on a passed ball as the pitch deflected off the catcher's glove.
The Red Flash added three runs in the top of the sixth. Norton started the inning with a single to center. Two passed balls allowed Norton to move to third. Cabell then lined a single into left as Norton crossed the plate.
Jordan Seneca (Plum, Pa./Plum) then drew a walk to move runners to first and second. Two batters later, Martire lined a shot to the wall in left center to score pinch-runner
Kelsie Marconi (Lowber, Pa./Yough) and Seneca to extend the lead to 5-0.
Sierra McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) launched a home run over the left field wall in the top of the seventh to extend the SFU lead to 6-0.
Sacred Heart broke the shutout with a run in the bottom of the seventh. With one out and runners on second and third, a sacrifice fly to right allowed Victoria D'Addario to score and cut the SFU lead to 6-1.
Second Game
Junior
Blaire Lauthers (Doylesburg, Pa./Fannett-Metal) started in the circle for the Red Flash. Lauthers earned the win by throwing four innings, allowing only two runs, both unearned, on four hits. Lauthers only walked one batter. Junior
Ketarah DeVries (Forreston, Ill./Forreston) closed out the final three innings, striking out four, while allowing no baserunners.
Kristen McCann threw the first two innings for Sacred Heart. She allowed four runs on five hits, while striking out four and walking one. Emily Orosco replaced McCann and went four innings. Orosco gave up one run on four hits, while striking out six and walking two.
Freshman
Hayley Norton (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove) went 4-for-4 with four RBI, including two doubles, and scored two runs. Sophomore
Jordan Seneca (Plum, Pa./Plum) added two hits and two RBI, while
Sierra McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) also drove in two runs. Junior
Kindra Witthus (Hudson, Wis./Hudson) crossed the plate three times, while McKee scored twice.
Norton is now one RBI away from tying the single-season record at SFU, held by Autumn Helsel in 1997.
The Red Flash stole a season-high 10 bases.
Sierra McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) and Seneca each stole two bases as eight different SFU players stole at least one base.
SFU stole 10 bases in a game for the first time since March 12, 2004 against Maryland-Eastern Shore.
Lauren Delgadillo had two hits and an RBI for Sacred Heart.
Saint Francis opened the game with two runs in the top of the first. McKee started the inning with a single to left. With Norton batting, McKee stole second and then went to third after a wild throw to second. Norton then reached on a walk and stole second. With two outs, Seneca hit a groundball to the hole on the right side of the infield. The ball deflected off the second baseman's glove and into right field, allowing McKee and Norton to score and give SFU a 2-0 lead.
The Red Flash added two runs in the top of the second.
Kindra Witthus (Hudson, Wis./Hudson) lined a one-out single to right and then stole second.
Cheyenne McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) then singled to right, moving Witthus to third. After a steal by C. McKee,
Sierra McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) hit a sacrifice fly to left to allow Witthus to score. Norton followed with a single through the right side to plate McKee and extend the SFU advantage to 4-0.
Sacred Heart scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth. With one out and the bases loaded, a sacrifice fly to left by McKenna Wiegand allowed Hannah Ford to score. Lauren Delgadillo followed with a single to right to drive in Jessica Dubbioso and cut the SFU lead to 4-2.
Saint Francis extended its lead to 5-2 in the top of the sixth. Witthus doubled to the gap in left center to begin the inning.
Cheyenne McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois)'s sacrifice bunt moved Witthus to third. A ground-rule double to right-center by Norton drove in Witthus.
SFU added six runs in the top of the seventh. The first run scored as
Kassidy Troxell (Navarre, Ohio/Perry) struck out, but a passed ball allowed
Jordan Seneca (Plum, Pa./Plum) to score from third and pinch-runner
Kelsie Marconi (Lowber, Pa./Yough) to go to third as Troxell reached base. Witthus then sent a groundball to third, which bounced off the third baseman and into the outfield as Marconi scored. A fielder's choice with the bases loaded by
Sierra McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) drove in Troxell. Norton followed with a single up the middle to score Witthus and McKee. The final run of the inning scored as Bower's groundball was misplayed by the third baseman to allow Norton to cross the plate.
