Softball Hits Six Home Runs in Doubleheader Sweep over Wagner

Game 1

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The Saint Francis softball team earned a 10-2 win in five innings over Wagner in Sunday's first game of the doubleheader.  The Red Flash had eight hits, including three home runs.  SFU improved to 20-14 on the season, including 2-1 in the NEC.  Wagner dropped to 11-15 with a 0-3 mark in conference play.

Redshirt junior Ketarah DeVries (Forreston, Ill./Forreston) threw the first four innings to earn her eighth win of the year.  She allowed two runs on only two hits.  DeVries tied a career-high with nine strikeouts, including striking out the side in the second inning.  Wagner's run in the first inning snapped a 16.2 scoreless innings streak.  Junior Ethel Santai (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove Area) pitched the final inning, striking out two.

Eleven strikeouts were the most in a game by the Red Flash since having 11 against Sacred Heart on April 21, 2012.

Morgan Brown started the game for Wagner, throwing 4.1 innings, while allowing 10 runs, eight earned, on eight hits.  She struck out five and walked four.  Gina Massaro pitched the final two outs, including a strikeout.

Junior Alexis Bower (Cogan Station, Pa./Williamsport Area), freshman Hayley Norton (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove) and freshman Melanie Martire (Herndon, Va./Herndon) each hit home runs, with Martire's being the first of her Red Flash career.  Bower hit her seventh home run of the season, while Norton hit her team-leading ninth.  Norton had three RBI and two runs scored, while Martire and freshman Cheyenne McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) each had two RBI and two runs.

The Seahawks got on the board in the bottom of the first.  With one out and runners on first and third, a wild pitch allowed Lauren Serrato to cross the plate and give Wagner a 1-0 lead.

The Red Flash took the lead in the top of the third on Norton's home run.  Kindra Witthus (Hudson, Wis./Hudson) drew a walk to leadoff the inning and Cheyenne McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) was hit by a pitch.  Norton then sent a ball the opposite way over the left field wall to give SFU a 3-1 lead.  It was Norton's ninth homer of the season and second of the weekend.

Saint Francis exploded for five runs in the top of the fourth.  With one out, pinch-hitter freshman Martire collected her first career hit on a single to center. Witthus followed with a single to left.  The following batter, Cheyenne McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) then singled to center and the ball got past the centerfielder, allowing Martire and Witthus to score and McKee to go to third.  Sierra McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) then hit a bloop single on the infield to drive in her sister.  Two batters later, Norton drew a walk to setup a blast over the center field wall by Bower.  The Red Flash led 8-1.

Wagner added a run in the bottom of the fourth.  With a runner on second, a throwing error by SFU allowed the runner to cross the plate as Hana Gilbert scored to cut the SFU lead to 8-2.

The Red Flash responded with two runs in the top of the fifth.  Kassidy Troxell (Navarre, Ohio/Perry) drew a walk to set up Martire.  The freshman made her second hit of the day count, sending it over the left-field fence to extend the lead to 10-2.

After four scoreless innings, the Red Flash got on the board on a three-run home run by Hayley Norton (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove).  Kindra Witthus (Hudson, Wis./Hudson) led off the inning with a single to center and moved to second on Cheyenne McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois)'s sacrifice bunt.  Sierra McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) then reached on an infield single to set up runners on first and third.  Norton then launched a fly ball over the wall in left-center, her 10th home run of the year, to give SFU a 3-0 advantage.

Wagner responded with a run in the bottom of the fifth.  After a leadoff single by Erica Krumbine, Brianna Tredway lined a double to left center to drive in Krumbine and cut the SFU lead to 3-1.

Saint Francis added four runs in the top of the seventh.  Sierra McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) started the inning by hustling out a double on a blooper to left.  Norton then drew a walk.  After a fielder's choice by Alexis Bower (Cogan Station, Pa./Williamsport Area), Madison Cabell (Ivor, Va./Southampton) lined a ball to right field for an opposite-field, three-run homer.  It was Cabell's third home run of the season.  Jordan Seneca (Plum, Pa./Plum) made it back-to-back homers for the Red Flash, sending a fly ball over the left field fence to extend the lead to 7-1.
