Softball Reaches 30 Wins with Doubleheader Split at Robert Morris

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – The Saint Francis softball team earned a 9-0 win in its second game against Robert Morris on Sunday to split the doubleheader.  After falling 6-2 in the first game, SFU bounced back with three homers and a shutout performance by Ethel Santai (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove Area) in the second game.  The Red Flash improved to 30-21 overall and 10-2 in the NEC.

Saint Francis has reached 30 wins for the second straight season and the third time in program history.  The Red Flash also reached 10 NEC wins for the fifth time and its first since 2008.

Sophomore Madison Cabell (Ivor, Va./Southampton) launched her 10th home run of the season to start the second inning of game two.  The Red Flash now has four players with double-digit home runs on the season.  Cabell joins Jordan Seneca (Plum, Pa./Plum)(17), Hayley Norton (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove)(14) and Alexis Bower (Cogan Station, Pa./Williamsport Area)(11).

Saint Francis is one of four teams in the nation with four players with 10-plus home runs, joining Louisiana-Lafayette, Oregon and Pitt.

Sophomore Jordan Seneca (Plum, Pa./Plum)'s home run in the second game was her 17th of the season.  She is now tied with Rachel Heinze (Mount St. Mary's) for the Northeast Conference lead.  SFU now has 71 home runs as a team this year.

With a run in the third inning of the second game, Alexis Bower (Cogan Station, Pa./Williamsport Area) scored the 94th of her career to tie Stacy Trice (1995-98) for fifth place all-time at SFU.

The Red Flash concludes the regular season next week with home doubleheaders against Central Connecticut State and Fairleigh Dickinson.  SFU hosts the Blue Devils for a 1 p.m. twinbill on Thursday and the Knights on Saturday for a Noon doubleheader.

First Game
Junior Ketarah DeVries (Forreston, Ill./Forreston) started in the circle for the Red Flash.  DeVries pitched 3.2 innings, giving up six runs, five earned, on nine hits.  She struck out two and did not walk a batter.  DeVries held RMU scoreless through the first three innings, before the Colonials posted six runs in the fourth inning.  Junior Blaire Lauthers (Doylesburg, Pa./Fannett-Metal) finished the game, going 2.1 innings, while allowing two hits and striking out one.

Lacee Collins threw the first four innings for Robert Morris.  Collins allowed one run on seven hits and walked one.  Kaitlin Ellzy replaced Collins to start the fifth and went three innings to earn the save.  Ellzy pitched three innings, giving up one run on two hits, while walking three and striking out one.

Sophomore Madison Cabell (Ivor, Va./Southampton) had two hits, including a double, and drove in a run for the Red Flash.  Freshman Cheyenne McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) contributed an RBI double, while junior Kindra Witthus (Hudson, Wis./Hudson) doubled and scored a run.  Jordan Seneca (Plum, Pa./Plum) and junior Alexis Bower (Cogan Station, Pa./Williamsport Area) each had two hits.

Kristen Gabel and Ashley Gerhart each hit home runs for Robert Morris.  Lauren Hackett drove in two runs.

After three scoreless innings, the Red Flash took the lead in the top of the fourth.  With two outs, Witthus hit a fly ball to the wall in left center for a double.  A wild pitch allowed Witthus to move to third.  Cheyenne McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) followed by lining a ball to the fence in center for a double to plate Witthus and give SFU a 1-0 advantage.

Robert Morris answered with six runs in the bottom of the fourth.  Kristen Gabelt led off the inning with a home run to left.  After a single by Haileigh Stocks, RMU senior Ashley Gerhart lined a homer over the right field fence.  Later in the inning, a two-out single, with the bases loaded, by Lauren Hackett allowed Olivia Lorusso and Abrielle McCartney to cross the plate.  Gabelt then hit a groundball to the right side of the infield, with an error allowing Jordan Gurganus to score.  The Colonials led 6-1.

The Red Flash cut the deficit to four runs in the top of the fifth.  After a leadoff walk by Hayley Norton (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove) and a fielder's choice by Seneca, Bower hit a bloop single down the right field line.  Cabell then lined a single to the wall in left center to drive in Seneca.  Saint Francis trailed 6-2.

Second Game
Junior Ethel Santai (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove Area) got the start in game two for the Red Flash, throwing a complete game.  In seven innings, Santai allowed just three hits, and did not walk a batter, while striking out one.  The junior did not give up a hit through the first 2.1 innings and allowed only three innings with more than one baserunner.

Laura Coulter started in the circle for Robert Morris and then re-entered in the sixth inning.  Coulter went a total of three innings, allowing four runs, on six hits, with four strikeouts and two walks.  Kaitlin Ellzy replaced Coulter with one out in the second.  Ellzy threw 1.2 innings, giving up three runs on two hits and two walks, while striking out a pair.  Lacee Collins pitched 2.1 innings before Coulter re-entered with one out in the sixth.  Collins allowed two runs on four hits, with a strikeout and two walks.

Jordan Seneca (Plum, Pa./Plum) led the Red Flash offense with three hits, in four at-bats, while driving in three runs and scoring three runs.  Kassidy Troxell (Navarre, Ohio/Perry) added three hits and drove in a run, while Cheyenne McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) and Madison Cabell (Ivor, Va./Southampton) both homered.

Ashley Gerhart and Stacey Capp each had doubles for Robert Morris.

Saint Francis took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second.  Cabell worked a 2-2 count and fouled off three pitches before blasting a shot over the center field wall.  It was Cabell's 10th dinger of the season.

The Red Flash added two runs in the top of the third.  Jordan Seneca (Plum, Pa./Plum) and Alexis Bower (Cogan Station, Pa./Williamsport Area) reached on back-to-back singles to start the frame.  Two batters later, a single by Kassidy Troxell (Navarre, Ohio/Perry) to left drove in Seneca from second.  Melanie Martire (Herndon, Va./Herndon) drew a walk to load the bases.  A groundout into a fielder's choice by Kindra Witthus (Hudson, Wis./Hudson) plated Bower to extend the SFU lead to 3-0.

Saint Francis expanded its lead in the top of the fourth.  Sierra McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) drew a leadoff walk and then stole second during Hayley Norton (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove)'s at-bat.  Norton followed by lining a ball to left for a double, scoring McKee.  Seneca then fit a bloop single just inside the line in right field as Norton came around to score.

After a 40-minute delay, due to lightning, the Red Flash added another run in the top of the fourth.  With one out and the bases loaded, Melanie Martire (Herndon, Va./Herndon) hit a sacrifice fly to shallow right field.  After a sliding catch by the right fielder, Seneca tagged up and scored from third, giving SFU a 6-0 lead.

The Red Flash blasted two homers in the top of the seventh to add three runs.  Cheyenne McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) led off the inning by lining a 1-2 pitch over the centerfield wall for her fifth of the season.  After a one-out walk by Norton, Seneca launched a fly ball over the fence in center to extend the SFU lead to 9-0.
