Football Falls 35-28 in Tough Battle at Towson

TOWSON, Md. – The Saint Francis football team fell 35-28 in a hard-fought game at Towson on Saturday night at Johnny Unitas Stadium.  The Red Flash held a 28-13 lead going into halftime, but the Tigers scored 22 unanswered to complete the comeback.  SFU dropped to 0-2 on the year, with tough losses to No. 15 Montana and the Tigers, while Towson improved to 1-1.
 
The Red Flash gained 287 total yards, including 160 through the air.  Senior quarterback Zack Drayer (Hershey, Pa./Hershey ) completed 14-of-23 passes for 160 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.  He also rushed for 41 yards on 15 attempts, including a touchdown.  Junior running back Marcus Bagley (Cleveland Heights, Ohio/Cleveland Heights) gained 96 yards on 21 carries, including a long run of 17 yards. 
 
Junior Ajayi (Delran, N.J./Holy Cross) caught a career-high six passes for 68 yards.  Sophomore Kamron Lewis (Fresno, Calif./Edison) hauled in three catches, two for touchdowns, for 74 yards.  Lewis caught touchdown passes of 13 and 60 yards. 
 
On the defensive side, the Red Flash forced two turnovers and had two sacks.  Senior Lorenzo Jerome (Sunrise, Fla./J.P. Taravella) made a team-high nine tackles and returned a fumble 89 yards for a touchdown for the game's first score.  Fellow senior Solomon Leaeno (Kapolei, Hawaii/James Campbell) recorded seven stops, with half a tackle for loss, while sophomore Sean Orsini (Imperial, Pa./West Allegheny) had six tackles, with five solo. 
 
Junior Shawn McCord (Aberdeen, N.J. /Red Bank Catholic) had four tackles, with 1.5 for loss and a sack, while Jalen Wells (Westerville, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) added a sack and a pass breakup.  Junior Malik Duncan (Cleveland, Ohio/Cleveland Central Catholic) made five stops and broke up a pair of passes.  Junior Austin Gray (Egg Harbor Township, N.J. /Egg Harbor Township) forced the fumble that Jerome returned and Ben Bruni (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) had an interception, diving for the ball after the Towson quarterback was hit from behind by McCord.
 
Towson gained 473 total yards, including 359 passing.  Ellis Knudson completed 10-of-22 passes for 301 yards, two touchdowns and an interception, as well as a rushing touchdown, after starter Morgan Mahalak left the game with an injury.  Mahalak was four-of-five for 58 yards.  Running back Darius Victor rushed for 70 yards and a score on 18 carries, while Christian Summers caught six passes for 232 yards and two touchdowns.
 
The Red Flash got on the board first.  After the SFU offense fumbled at its own 11 to start the game, the SFU defense forced a fumble of its own.  Gray hit Victor in the backfield to cause the fumble, which was picked up by Jerome and returned 89 yards for a touchdown.  Senior Lance Geesey (Harrisburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley)'s extra point put Saint Francis up 7-0 just 24 seconds into the game.
 
Towson responded with a 14-play, 64-yard drive for a field goal.  The Tigers' Austin O'Neill hit a 28-yard kick to cut the SFU lead to 7-3 with 7:39 to go in the opening quarter.
 
Saint Francis extended its lead to 14-3 early in the second quarter.  Drayer connected with Lewis for a 60-yard touchdown.  Drayer completed three passes for 70 yards on the drive. 
 
The Tigers cut the SFU lead to 14-10 with 12:04 left in the second quarter.  Knudson reached the end zone on a 20-yard run. 
 
The Red Flash added a touchdown with 38 seconds left in the half as Drayer got into the end zone on a seven-yard run.  Saint Francis put together a 14-play, 94-yard drive, covering 6:22.  Drayer completed four passes for 50 yards on the drive, while Bagley ran for 36 yards on six carries and had a 17-yard reception on a swing play.
 
Saint Francis scored again 24 seconds later.  Towson's Knudson was hit as he was throwing the ball by McCord.  Bruni made a diving catch for an interception at the Towson 13.  On the first play after the pick, Drayer hit Lewis on a fade to the right corner of the end zone.  It was Lewis' second touchdown grab of the day.  Geesey's extra point gave SFU a 28-10 advantage.
 
However, Towson got a field goal to close the half.  After a 54-yard completion from Knudson to Summers, O'Neill hit a 29-yard field goal as time expired.  The Red Flash led 28-13 at the half.
 
Towson opened the second half with a scoring drive, covering 13 plays and 75 yards.  Victor finished the drive with a two-yard touchdown run.  Knudson snuck into the end zone on an option play for a two-point conversion to cut the SFU lead to 28-21.
 
The Tigers tied the game with 4:40 left in the third quarter.  Knudson connected with Summers for a 94-yard touchdown down the sideline.  The extra point evened the score at 28-all.
 
The Red Flash had a chance to take a 31-28 lead with 6:32 left in the game, but Geesey's 30-yard attempt was blocked.  SFU had put together a solid drive, covering 52 yards on 12 plays for 7:03. 
 
Towson took the lead with 2:21 left in the game.  After a punt rolled out of bounds at the SFU 43, Knudson found a Summers for a diving catch in the end zone.  The point after gave the Tigers a 35-28 advantage. 
 
The Red Flash continues non-conference play next weekend, traveling to Columbia.  Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Robert K. Kraft Field against the Lions.  It will be Columbia's season opener.
