Flash Points:
- Mario Mastrangelo (Venetia, Pa/Peters Township) scooped up a loose ball and found Nicco Mastrangelo (Venetia, Pa/Peters Township) for the match's only goal
- It was Nicco's second goal of the weekend
- Marcus Rojas (Fremont, Calif./Bellarmine College Preparatory) earned his third clean sheet of the season
Niagara Falls, N.Y.- Mario Mastrangelo (Venetia, Pa/Peters Township) found twin brother Nicco in the 30th minute and the sophomore scored his second goal of the weekend and the season in a 1-0 Red Flash win over the Niagara Purple Eagles on Sunday afternoon.
Mario Mastrangelo (Venetia, Pa/Peters Township) took advantage of a loose ball that the Niagara keeper and defense could not secure. Mario then found brother Nicco with a quick flip and Nicco headed the ball into the open net.
Both teams had good pressure early as Jonathan Otting hit the crossbar in the third minute, striking a crossing pass from the top of the box. The Red Flash defense then withstood good pressure from Niagara. The Eagles earned four corner kicks in a 10 minute span, but the Flash only surrendered two shots, one stopped by Rojas and some good fortune found the ball hit the post on another.
Troye Kiernan (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) led the Flash on a strong counter attack, just missing the match's first goal on a big save from Joel Gerberich. Minutes later, the Mastrangelo connection gave the Flash the lead. Neither team would threaten much in the rest of the half as SFU took the lead into the half.
The Flash pressured throughout much of the second half, getting good chances about 15 minutes into the half. A pair of
Stefan Sjekloca (Belgrade, Serbia/Fryeburg Academy) corners led to good chances that just missed the goal. SFU kept the possession for most of the half.Kiernan was denied on another fine Gerberich save that led to three consecutive corners for the Flash from
Tulio Canineu (Corbin, Ky/Corbin), however the Niagara back line held strong. Niagara pushed one more time late in the second half but the SFU defense blocked down the shot and regained possession to run out the clock.
The Flash out shot Niagara 12-9 and 6-2 in shots on goal. SFU also held a 6-4 edge in set pieces.
Marcus Rojas (Fremont, Calif./Bellarmine College Preparatory) made two saves for his third shutout of the year. The Flash now sit at 4-2 on the year while Niagara is 1-3-1. SFU wraps up their six-match road trip next weekend at the Inaria Classic in New York. The Flash will play host Cornell on Friday and Colgate on Sunday.
