Flash Points:Â
- Neto scored just 13 seconds into double overtime
- Mario Mastrangelo (Venetia, Pa/Peters Township) scored in the first half
- Cornell forced OT with a goal with under five minutes remaining
ITHACA, NY-Â Pedro Neto (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil/Instituto Nossa Senhora Da Gloria) hammered home a rebound in the goal box just seconds into the second overtime helping the Red Flash win their fourth straight match, 2-1 over Cornell in double overtime.Â
The Flash dominated the stat sheet on Friday, out shooting Cornell 17-8 and 11-5 in shots on goal but needed 10 extra minutes to earn the victory on Friday night.Â
Saint Francis capitalized on their first opportunity of the game against the Bears. In the eighth minute, Jonathan Otting streaked up the right side and fired a crossing pass over the goal box to
Mario Mastrangelo (Venetia, Pa/Peters Township). The sophomore headed the ball back to the right post and into the net on the match's first shot for either team. The play slowed down considerably after the early goal as neither team was able to put a shot on goal over the next 25 minutes.
Marcus Rojas (Fremont, Calif./Bellarmine College Preparatory) made one of his four saves midway through the period but neither team threatened again until late in the half. SFU looked for one more tally before the half was over but
Tulio Canineu (Corbin, Ky/Corbin)'s shot was blocked and
Nicco Mastrangelo (Venetia, Pa/Peters Township)'s shot was stopped by Cornell keeper Ryan Shellow. It would be 1-0 SFU at the half.Â
The second half picked up where the first let off with neither team getting a lot of opportunities to score.
Troye Kiernan (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) was stopped by Shellow early in the half and neither team would generate another chance until the 71st minute. The Flash fired a series of shots at Shellow following set pieces but could not find the insurance goal.Â
Cornell started to press in the 76th minute, forcing Rojas to make a pair of saves. The Bears' best chance to date came in the 81st minute when the Flash defense blocked a shot only to see the rebound ring off the post. Moments later,
Francis de Vries (Christchurch, New Zealand/Cashmere) was whistled for a yellow card, prompting a free kick. Jonathan Cullom struck from 25 yards out, around the wall and into the back corner of the net to tie the match at one in the 86th minute. The late equalizer sent the match into extra time.Â
In the first overtime, the Flash had an opportunity  to end the match in the 93 minute but
Mario Mastrangelo (Venetia, Pa/Peters Township)'s shot was blocked down by Cornell. Just 13 seconds into the second overtime, Neto pounced on the loose ball and sent the Red Flash to 5-2 on the season. With the loss, Cornell now sits at 0-4-1 on the year. Tonight's match was SFU's opening leg in the Inaria Classic. They will travel to Colgate on Sunday to wrap up the Classic against the Raiders. Match time is set for 2 p.m. Â
