Colgate Brushes Past Men's Soccer 2-0

Flash Points:
  • Colgate came into the match at #2 in the Northeast Region, SFU was #5
  • The Flash had a slight edge, 5-4 in shots on goal
  • Saint Francis returns home Wednesday afternoon

HAMILTON, NY- Colgate scored in the third minute of the match and the Raiders made the early tally stand in a 2-0 win over the Red Flash on Sunday afternoon.

The Raiders' Jared Stroud stole the ball deep in SFU territory in the early stages and fed Uylosa Omorogbe for a goal, eluding a charging Marcus Rojas (Fremont, Calif./Bellarmine College Preparatory). Saint Francis challenged Colgate throughout the half, looking for the equalizer. In the 12th minute, Lucas Canineu (Corbin, Ky/Corbin) had a shot stopped and the rebound shot from Troye Kiernan (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) was blocked by the Raiders' defense. After the Flash just missed on a couple of chances, the SFU defense withstood a couple of set pieces from Colgate midway through the half. The Raiders got a pair of cornern kicks in the 26th minute but the Flash forced a header high and blocked down the second attempt. It would go to the half 1-0 Raiders.

Colgate added insurance in the early stages of the second half. Just 10 minutes in, Colin O'Neil bent a shot around Rojas and into the net to make it 2-0. The Raiders did a good job preventing the Flash from generating chances, holding SFU without a shot until the 75th minute where the Flash put two on frame, but could not score. Minutes later, Francis de Vries (Christchurch, New Zealand/Cashmere) struck off a free kick but was denied by the Raiders' keeper. That was the last solid opportunity for the Flash who fell to 5-3 on the season.

The Raiders held a slim 13-12 edge in shots but the Red Flash held a 5-4 advantage in shots on goal. Sain Francis will look to rebound against another Patriot League foe on Wednesday when they host Bucknell at the Stokes SoccerPlex. Match time is set for 3 p.m..
