LORETTO, PA-Â Sara Suler (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) and
Casey Gallaher (Sidman, Pa./Forest Hills) scored in the first half and the Red Flash picked up their second win of the season in a 2-1 win over the Virginia Military Institute.Â
"We are certainly happy with the win," head coach
Brenda van Stralen said. "But we need to learn to finish our chances and put teams away."
The Flash opened the match on the attack as just over a minute into the match,
Gabi Morales (Madrid, Spain/Colegio La Inmaculada-Marillac) struck a header that forced a sprawling save inside the near post from VMI keeper Emily Marbury. Â SFU kept the pressure on, getting two more shots in the first six minutes of the match. Off a throw in,
Sara Suler (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) settled the ball down and hit a beautiful chip shot that forced Marbury off her line, the keeper leapt back but the ball sailed over her head and into the back corner to make it 1-0 Saint Francis in the ninth minute. Minutes later, the Flash counter attacked after blocking down a VMI free kick.
Siobhan Bross (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) place a thru-ball past the VMI defenders and hit
Casey Gallaher (Sidman, Pa./Forest Hills) in stride. The senior raced into the far side of the box and beat Marbury to the far post to make it 2-0 Red Flash in the 20th minute.Â
Twenty seconds after the goal, VMI got on the offensive. The Keydets pressured the Saint Francis defense and drew a foul inside the goal box. Amy Horney went into the top left corner on the penalty kick to make it 2-1. The Red Flash went back on the attack following the goal and nearly made it 3-1 on multiple occasions. The Flash were led by Gallaher who fired off four shots in the final 20 minutes of play, forcing two saves while missing just wide on a pair of occasions. SFU controlled the possession for the first half with the exception of the PK goal and one final rush by VMI late in the first half. Hernan made an initial save and off the rebound, the sophomore stuffed a shot from Olivia Cotton. It would be 2-1 Saint Francis at the half.Â
The teams went back-and-forth in the early stages of the second half.
Julia Hernan (Pottstown, Pa./The Hill School) made a diving save a minute into the half and was able to flip the field after a goal kick. Her outlet sparked a counter attack that saw Morales get denied her first goal of the year on a sprawling save and
Abigail Tarosky (North Huntington, Pa./Norwin) hitting the post off of the rebound. The Flash out shot VMI 13-3 in the second half including eight shots on goal, but could not get one past Marbury. Hernan made two second half saves, but aside from the first stop, wasn't really tested in the final 45 minutes. Saint Francis controlled the play for the majority of the 90 minutes, resulting in a 24-9 advantage in shots including 16-5 in shots on goal.Â
The victory improves SFU to 2-7 on the season while VMI falls to 3-5. The Red Flash will look to sweep the weekend on Sunday when they travel to Virginia to take on the Longwood Lancers. Match time is set for 2 p.m.Â
