FARMVILLE, VA- Freshman
Alyssa McGhee (Altoona, Pa./Bishop Guilfoyle) scored her first collegiate goal but it was not enough as Longwood prevailed 2-1 in double overtime on Sunday afternoon.
Saint Francis out shot Longwood 24-16 including an 8-7 edge in shots on goal.
"We need to learn to finish teams off," head coach
Brenda van Stralen said. "If you let teams hang around, you are going to get beat."
After Hernan made a save in the infant stages of the match, the Red Flash struck first in the ninth minute.
Leah Hardin (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen) found McGhee on the left side of the field and freshman forward turned the corner and beat the keeper to the left side for the match's first goal. After the goal, Saint Francis kept on the attack as Hardin and
Sara Suler (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) each just missed wide. The Flash limited Longwood's chances in the first half, only allowing one true push from the Lancers. Longwood earned a pair of corners but the Red Flash did not surrender a shot. SFU took a 1-0 lead into the half.
In the second half, the Flash threatened early with
Gabi Morales (Madrid, Spain/Colegio La Inmaculada-Marillac) getting denied by Maria Kirby in the 50th minute, Morales had a team high four shots on goal on Sunday. Longwood drew even moments later. Off a corner kick, Hernan made a save on the initial header, but Longwood found the rebound and the equalizer in the 52nd minute. Saint Francis nearly struck right back, earning a corner in the 55th minute but a pair of
Abigail Tarosky (North Huntington, Pa./Norwin) shots were blocked down by the Lancer defense.
Neither team threatened over the next several minutes until
Casey Gallaher (Sidman, Pa./Forest Hills) rang a shot off the post in the 73rd minute. The shot earned a corner kick but the Flash could not capitalize. Morales would be denied once again minutes later and neither team could find the go-ahead goal in regulation. The same would be said about the first overtime where the only shot went wide off the foot of Hardin. Morales was again denied in the opening seconds of the second overtime. Neither team would threaten until late in the period. The Red Flash defense cleared a ball off the line on a corner kick in the 108th minute. Off the second set piece, Longwood found the golden goal as Jessica O'Bryant scored off the set piece.
The loss puts the Red Flash at 2-8 on the season. They will wrap up the non-conference schedule next Friday when they host Duquesne at 3 p.m.
