LORETTO, PA- Saint Francis struck for two goals in just over a minute in the second half and shutdown the Bucknell offense in a 3-0 victory over the Bison at the Stokes SoccerPlex.
Dominic Ramirez (Johnstown, Pa./Westmont Hilltop) broke a scoreless tie after he knocked in a rebound in the 57th minute. Ramirez had his initial shot blocked off a
Stefan Sjekloca (Belgrade, Serbia/Fryeburg Academy) corner kick,
Pedro Neto (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil/Instituto Nossa Senhora Da Gloria)'s follow was also blocked before Ramirez hammered home the second rebound. Moments later, off another Sjeklocka corner,
Jack Webber (Bernville, Pa./Tulpehocken) went un-marked and headed home the set piece into the center of the net to make it 2-0 in a 68 second span.
The first half was largely uneventful with neither team fielding a shot on goal and Bucknell owning a slight 4-2 edge in total shots. Both sides spent the better part of the half in the middle of the field as neither team was able to seize momentum in the first 45 minutes.
The Flash were able to take control of the match with Ramirez's goal and took complete control of the match with Webber's goal moments later. Bucknell was able to get some minor chances off set pieces but the Saint Francis' defense prevented any strong scoring chances throughout the second half.
Marcus Rojas (Fremont, Calif./Bellarmine College Preparatory) was forced to make one save, picking off an Adam Bradshaw shot from just outside the box. Rojas helped to slow the Bison offense by securing several crosses before they reached their intended target.
Saint Francis put the game away for good in the 82nd minute as
Tulio Canineu (Corbin, Ky/Corbin) scored his first regular-season goal for SFU. Off his own corner, Canineu took a deflected Webber header at the top of the goal box and struck it into the top right corner of the net to put the exclamation point on the victory.
SFU out shot Bucknell 12-9 overall and scored on three of their four shots on goal. The SFU defense limited the Bison to just one shot on target, saved by Rojas. The Red Flash also had the slight 5-4 advantage on corner kicks. The victory improves Saint Francis to 6-3 overall while Bucknell falls to 2-5-1. The men are next in action next Tuesday as they travel to Lehigh to take on the Mountain Hawks at 7 p.m.
