LORETTO, PA-Â Julia Hernan (Pottstown, Pa./The Hill School) made 10 saves for the Flash but Duquesne won their fourth-straight meeting between the two in-state rivals, 6-0 on Friday afternoon at the Stokes SoccerPlex.Â
Both teams came out pressing in a back-and-forth first half. Hernan made two key saves early, stopping Katie O'Connor twice in the early stages. SFU just missed on an opportunity in the 19th minute after a chip shot from
Sara Suler (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) deflected off the keeper's hands and off the cross bar. The rebound came to
Alyssa McGhee (Altoona, Pa./Bishop Guilfoyle) but her shot was knocked away by keeper Kyra Murphy. Duquesne would score off the counter attack as O'Connor struck from inside the goal box in the 25th minute of play. SFU kept the pressure on after the goal and
Siobhan Bross (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) had another quality chance for the Flash as her skip shot from just outside the goal box was batted down by Murphy. The Dukes made it 2-0 late in the first half, scoring off a free kick from just outside the goal box. That would be the score at the end of 45 minutes.Â
Again the Flash would be denied on a strong opportunity as they came out with good pace in the second half.
Gabi Morales (Madrid, Spain/Colegio La Inmaculada-Marillac) made a nifty move to find space and her shot deflected off keeper Lexi Cooke and just wide of the post for a corner kick. The Dukes were able to counter off the corner kick and earned one of their own, leading to the third goal of the match as O'Connor headed home her second of the match. The Dukes added insurances goals as the second half wore on as the Flash countered.
Sara Suler (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) missed just wide on a pair of occasions as Saint Francis continued to pressure but could not score.Â
The victory improves Duquesne to 4-3-2 on the season while Saint Francis sits at 2-9 as both teams enter their respective conference play. Next up for the Red Flash are the defending NEC champion Fairleigh Dickinson Knights next Sunday. Match time from the Garden State is set for noon.Â
