Men's Soccer Drops 3-0 Match at Dayton

Flash Points:
  • Marcus Rojas (Fremont, Calif./Bellarmine College Preparatory) made three saves in the loss
  • Stefan Sjekloca (Belgrade, Serbia/Fryeburg Academy) led the Flash with a pair of shots
  • Dayton struck three times in 16 minutes

DAYTON, OHIO- The Dayton Flyers broke open a scoreless match in the second half in a 3-0 set back for the Red Flash on Friday night at Baujan Field.

Rojas and the Flash stood strong early against the Flyers in what proved to be a physical affair. There were 32 fouls called in the match, including four in the first three minutes. Dayton had the first offensive surge of the game, resulting in four corner kicks in a four-minute span. SFU's defense held strong, allowing just one shot off the set pieces that was stopped by Rojas. CJ Smolyn (Holland, PA/Germantown Academy) got the Red Flash's first chance of the day on a shot midway through the half that was stopped by Justin Saliba. The Flyers countered off the save as Rok Taneski's shot was cleared off the line by the SFU defense. Rojas stopped the shot off the ensuing set piece in what was the last offensive chance for either team in the half. The match was scoreless after 45 minutes.

Saint Francis was the aggressor in the early stages of the second half. A Brendan McGhee (Pickering, Ontario, Canada/St. Mary's Catholic) corner led to a Sjekloca shot and Dominic Ramirez (Johnstown, Pa./Westmont Hilltop) had a shot just moments later, but Saliba had the answer for both. The Flyers struck first in the 61st minute, after a flurry of opportunities just minutes earlier, Taneski finished off a crossing pass to beat Rojas to the far post and make it 1-0.

The Flash looked to answer right back as the ensuing rush resulted in a pair of Sjekloca corner kicks, but Saint Francis couldn't connect. Minutes later, the Flyers converted off a free kick as Nick Hagenkord headed home the set piece to make it 2-0 Flyers. Again SFU applied pressure, looking to get on the scoreboard. A pair of Lucas Canineu (Corbin, Ky/Corbin) corner kicks were sandwiched by a Renan Fuentes (Sao Paolo, Brazil/Colegio Joao XXIII) shot that was blocked out of bounds. Hagenkord earned his second of the night in the 80th minute, finishing off a crossing pass to round out the scoring. SFU managed a pair of shots late but couldn't find the target.

The loss sets the Red Flash back to 1-2 on the year while Dayton improves to 1-2. The Flash continue their trek through the Buckeye State on Sunday, when they take on Cincinnati. Match time is set for 4 p.m..
