Saint Francis Falls 20-9 at No. 22 Albany

  • SFU football fell 20-9 at No. 22 Albany on Saturday in the final game of a four-game road trip to start the season.
  • The Red Flash held a 9-0 lead at halftime off of three field goals by Lance Geesey (Harrisburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley), who know has 51 field goals in his career.
  • Senior quarterback Zack Drayer (Hershey, Pa./Hershey ) threw for 270 yards, while sophomore receiver Kamron Lewis (Fresno, Calif./Edison) had a career-high nine catches for 121 yards.

ALBANY, N.Y. – The Saint Francis football team fell 20-9 at No. 22 Albany on Saturday at Tom & Mary Casey Stadium.  The Red Flash held a 9-0 lead at halftime, but four turnovers helped the Great Danes to complete the comeback.  SFU dropped to 1-3 on the season, while Albany improved to 4-0.
 
Saint Francis outgained Albany, 415-251 on the night.  The Red Flash had 270 yards through the air and 145 on the ground, while holding the Great Danes to 83 yards passing.
 
Senior quarterback Zach Drayer completed 20-of-34 passes, including 14-of-16 in the first half, with 270 yards and two interceptions.  Sophomore wideout Kamron Lewis (Fresno, Calif./Edison) set career highs with nine catches for 121 yards.  Junior tight end Colin Hindle (Redondo Beach, Calif./Redondo Union) caught two passes for 35 yards, while Rodriguez Alexander caught a 37-yard pass.  Alexander and Hindle recorded their first career receptions, along with sophomore Dennis James (Jersey City, N.J./St. Peter's Prep) adding his first career catch, a 17 yarder.
 
Junior running back Marcus Bagley (Cleveland Heights, Ohio/Cleveland Heights) rushed for 69 yards on 19 carries and added two catches for 40 yards, all in the first half before leaving the game with an injury.  Sophomore Jymere Jordan-Toney (Philadelphia, Pa./Franklin) added 45 yards on 11 carries.
 
Senior kicker Lance Geesey (Harrisburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) hit three field goals on the day, connecting on 21, 50 and 33-yard attempts.  Geesey's 50-yarder in the second quarter was the 50th of his career and the ninth of his career from 40 or more yards.  Geesey recorded his 51st career field goal later in the quarter and is now tied with Duquesne's Austin Crimmins for the NEC career record.
 
Defensively, senior linebacker Solomon Leaeno (Kapolei, Hawaii/James Campbell) led the team with 10 tackles, including one for loss and half a sack.  Junior safety Delondo Boyd (Indian Head, Md./Henry E. Lackey) had eight stops, including a sack, while sophomore linebacker Sean Orsini (Imperial, Pa./West Allegheny) had a career-best eight tackles.  Junior linebacker Zane Stewart (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) recorded six tackles, including 2.5 for loss and a sack, while sophomore linebacker Ben Bruni (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) had a sack. 
 
Senior safety Lorenzo Jerome (Sunrise, Fla./J.P. Taravella) intercepted a pass, which he returned 28 yards, in the third quarter.  It was Jerome's 15th interception of his career.  He is the career active leader among FCS players.
 
Albany quarterback Neven Sussman completed 7-of-15 passes for 83 yards, with a touchdown and an interception.  Running back Elijah Ibitokun-Hanks, entering the game with the second-most rushing yards in the FCS, gained 90 yards on 22 carries, his first game under 100 yards this season.  Dione Alston added 87 yards and a touchdown on four carries, while Jordan Crockett had a receiving touchdown. 
 
Linebacker Michael Nicastro led the Great Danes with 16 tackles and a fumble recovery, while safety Josh Wynn added 10 tackles, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.  Kareem Brown and Jamal Robinson both recorded interceptions.
 
The Red Flash got on the board first with Geesey hitting a 21-yard field goal with 14:13 left in the second quarter.  The kick capped a 13-play, 72-yard drive covering 7:20.  Drayer completed all four pass attempts on the drive for a total of 33 yards. Bagley added 27 rushing yards on the drive.
 
Saint Francis extended its lead to 6-0 with 4:30 to go in the first half.  Geesey converted a 50-yard attempt to conclude a 13-play, 47-yard drive.  Lewis caught four passes on the drive, while Hindle had a 15-yard reception. 
 
The Red Flash increased its lead to 9-0 with a 33-yard field goal from Geesey to close the first half.  SFU covered 66 yards on 11 plays on the drive.  Bagley and Lewis each had 14-yard catches to help setup the field goal.
 
Albany cut the SFU lead to 9-3 on its first drive of the second half.  Ethan Stark hit a 24-yard attempt with 8:17 to go in the third quarter.  Ibitokun-Hanks had the biggest play of the 63-yard drive, a 14-yard run.
 
The Great Danes took the lead early in the fourth quarter.  Sussman hit Crockett on a 13-yard fade pass to the end zone.  Stark's extra point gave Albany a 10-9 advantage with 14:12 to go.
 
Albany added to their lead on the following offensive drive.  Alston took a handoff on a reverse and went 54 yards up the left sideline for the score.  The Red Flash trailed 17-9 with 11:39 remaining.
 
The Great Danes extended their lead to 20-9 on a 37-yard field goal by Stark with 3:56 left in the game.  Albany hit the field goal after an interception at the SFU 29.
 
The Red Flash makes its home debut next Saturday, October 1, as it hosts Malone for a 1 p.m. kick at DeGol Field.  Saint Francis will celebrate First Responders Day.
