LORETTO, Pa. – The Saint Francis women's tennis team begins the 2017 spring schedule this weekend with matches against Northern Kentucky and Wright State in Dayton, Ohio. The Red Flash competes against the Norse at 5 p.m. on Saturday and meets the Raiders at Noon on Sunday.
The Red Flash went 7-15 last season, including a 3-0 mark in NEC matches, and reached the NEC Semifinals for the third straight year. SFU returned three players from that squad.
Three SFU players tied for the team lead with five wins this Fall. Freshman
Laura Gutierrez (Bogota, Colombia/Cibercolegio UCN), the NEC Player and Rookie of the Month in October, went 5-5, with two wins at the Greater Cincinnati Invitational and Rocket Invitational.
Sophomore
Stephanie Miller (Washington, D.C./St. John's College High School) was 5-4, including reaching the draw final at the Greater Cincinnati Invitational, while freshman
Lucia Seigford (Madrid, Spain/Mirasur) was 5-3 and won her draw at the GCI. Seigford earned NEC Rookie of the Month honors for September after her performance.
Sophomore
Raksha Bode (Reunion, Fla./Florida Virtual School) and freshman
Kathryn Dunleavy (Farmington Hills, Mich./Mercy) each picked up four wins this Fall, with senior
Brittany Plaszewski (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) claiming one.
In doubles, Dunleavy and Miller combined for four wins to lead the Red Flash, including an appearance in their draw final at the Bucknell Invitational.
Northern Kentucky and Wright State are both making their spring debuts against the Red Flash.
Senior Klara Skopac led the Norse with four wins this Fall, while senior Sierra Nellessen and junior Sydney Power went 2-0 in doubles.
WSU senior Vanessa Madrigal had a team-best eight wins this Fall, while sophomore Taylor Culbertson had seven victories.
In doubles, sophomore Haily Morgan and senior Linsey Verstrepen combined for eight wins in tournament play. Vanessa and Abby Madrigal went 7-1 in doubles this Fall.
