Men's Basketball Falls 84-83 in Overtime Heartbreaker Against CCSU

LORETTO, Pa. – The Saint Francis men's basketball team fell 84-83 to Central Connecticut State in overtime on Saturday in a heartbreaking loss.  The Red Flash dropped to 7-12 overall and 4-4 in the NEC, while CCSU improved to 3-16 overall and 1-7 in conference play.
 
Senior Georgios Angelou (Halkida, Greece/Lykeio Kanithou) hit the first free throw of a 1-and-1 to give SFU an 83-81 lead with 12 seconds to go in overtime.  However, the Blue Devils' Khalen Cumberlander hit a game-winning three with 2.5 seconds left.
 
Sophomore Jamaal King (Salisbury, Md./Bishop O'Connell (Va.)) led four SFU players in double-figures, with 20 points.  He also had three assists and a steal.  Freshman Keith Braxton (Glassboro, N.J./The Lawrenceville School) recorded his fifth double-double of the season, with 19 points and 14 rebounds to go with two blocks and three steals.  Sophomore Josh Nebo (Houston, Texas/Cypress Lakes) hit all four shot attempts and all seven free throw attempts for 15 points and also recorded a double-double with 10 rebounds.  He added two blocks and now sits at 99 blocks for his career.  Angelou contributed 13 points, two assists and three steals.
 
The Red Flash shot 45 percent for the game, hitting 29-of-64 looks, but went just 7-of-25 from three.  SFU went 18-of-24 from the free throw line. 
 
Sophomore Austin Nehls led the Blue Devils with 21 points, hitting six threes, and seven rebounds.  Junior Mustafa Jones had 20 points, on 9-of-14 shooting, five rebounds and two blocks, while Cumberlander had 19 points, six boards and three steals.
 
CCSU hit 47 percent from the field, going 31-for-66, and 56 percent from three, hitting 14-of-24 shots.  CCSU hit 8-of-11 free throws and won the battle on the boards, 43-35.  
 
The Red Flash trailed 36-34 at halftime.  After a three by Angelou, SFU led 34-33, but CCSU's Austin Nehls was fouled on a three-point attempt with two seconds left and hit all three free throws to give the Blue Devils the lead.
 
Saint Francis shot 47 percent in the half, but went just 2-of-11 from three.  SFU scored 18 of its 34 points inside the paint and went five-of-seven from the foul line.  Angelou led the Red Flash with 10 points, hitting two threes, and two steals.  Nebo contributed nine points, five rebounds and two blocks, while hitting all three shot attempts and all three free throws.  Braxton contributed eight points and six rebounds, while King had seven points.
 
The Blue Devils hit 46 percent of its shots from the field, including six-of-nine from three, and hit four-of-five free throws.  Nehls led CCSU with 12 points in the half, making all three attempts from beyond the arc and adding the three free throws at the end of the half.  Mustafa Jones contributed eight points, making four-of-six shots.
 
CCSU took an 11-5 lead to start the game, with a three by Nehls and eight points from Jones, who hit a couple jumpers and made two layups.  Nebo then scored five straight for SFU, with a three-point play on a dunk and a jumper to cut the CCSU lead to 11-10 with 13:16 left in the half.
 
A few minutes later, a 9-0 run by CCSU pushed their lead to 24-18 with 7:31 to go.  Nehls hit two threes and Cumberlander added one.
 
An 8-0 run helped the Red Flash to take a 34-32 lead with 1:09 left.  The run started on a layup by Braxton and continued on a free throw by King.  Angelou then made a layup and hit a three to end the run.
 
However, CCSU closed the half with four free throws, one by Tidell Pierre and three by Nehls to give CCSU a 36-34 advantage at the half.
 
CCSU extended its lead to 47-38 early in the second half with a 7-0 run.  Pierre made a pair of layups and Nehls added a three. 
 
Saint Francis cut the deficit to three, 47-44 with six straight points from sophomore Andre Wolford (Willowick, Ohio/Saint Ignatius).  The sophomore picked up a steal and finished a layup at the other end to draw a foul.  He hit the free throw to complete the three-point play.  A couple possessions later, Wolford hit a three from the wing.
 
The Blue Devils scored 12 of the game's next 19 points to extend its lead to 59-51 with 7:41 to go.  Cumberlander and Jones each had five points during the stretch, with Harrison Key adding two free throws.
 
After a three by Nehls gave CCSU a 66-59 advantage with 4:56 to go in regulation, a layup by King and a three-point play by Braxton cut the deficit to 66-64 with 4:26 left. 
 
A three by Cumberlander ended the run, but King then hit two free throws.  A couple minutes later, Nebo slammed home a dunk and Braxton hit a free throw to tie the game at 69-69 with 1:34 to go. 
 
Cumberlander answered with a three-point play before Angelou hit two free throws to keep SFU within a point.  On a 1-and-1, Jones hit the first free throw, but missed the second, which led to Braxton going coast-to-coast for the game-tying layup to force the game into overtime.
 
Nehls hit a three and Jones added a layup to give CCSU an early 78-73 advantage in overtime.
 
However, the Red Flash went on a 9-0 run to take an 82-78 lead with 28 seconds left.  Nebo hit two free throws before King got the next seven points.  King hit a clutch three from the wing to tie the game at 78-78.  King then drove in for a layup off the corner of the glass to give SFU an 80-78 lead.  The sophomore then hit two free throws to extend the SFU lead to four.
 
CCSU's Kevin Seymour answered with a three at the other end to cut the SFU lead to one, 82-81.  Angelou was fouled after the in-bounds pass, with 12 seconds left, and went to the line for a 1-and-1.  He hit the first free throw, but missed the second. 
 
The Blue Devils came down on the other end of the floor, with Cumberlander hitting the game-winning three from the top of the key.
 
The Red Flash continues NEC play next Thursday at Wagner.  Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. with a broadcast on NEC Front Row. Wagner is 8-10 overall and 4-4 in the NEC after a 67-62 win over Sacred Heart on Saturday.
