ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Saint Francis women's tennis team fell 5-2 at Navy on Sunday. The Red Flash dropped the doubles point, but won two singles matches. SFU is now 1-3 this spring, while Navy improved to 3-0.
In the matchup at No. 1 doubles, freshmen
Laura Gutierrez (Bogota, Colombia/Cibercolegio UCN) and
Lucia Seigford (Madrid, Spain/Mirasur) took on Navy's Emily Louie-Meadors and Claudia Mackenzie. The Red Flash duo fell 6-3 and is now 3-4 overall.
Sophomores
Raksha Bode (Reunion, Fla./Florida Virtual School) and
Stephanie Miller (Washington, D.C./St. John's College High School) paired up at No. 2 against the Midshipmen's Aimee Dervishian and Catalina Rico. In a tough battle, the SFU pair fell 7-6, including 7-4 in the tiebreaker. Bode and Miller are 2-2 this spring.
Navy won the match at No. 3 by default due to no SFU player available.
"I felt we took steps forward today with many of the things we've struggled with so far this season," said Head Coach
Rob Castille. "In doubles, we had pretty good energy and we were looking to control the net more than we have in the past. There's still a lot we need to continue to work on, but I was happy with the progress we showed today."
Seigford met Ansofi Wreder at No. 2 singles. The SFU sophomore claimed the first set, 6-1. Wreder responded by winning the second set, 6-2. In the deciding set, Seigford came out on top, 6-1, to improve to 2-2 this spring.
Freshman
Kathryn Dunleavy (Farmington Hills, Mich./Mercy) took on Navy's Simona Babb. The Red Flash rookie won a tough first set, 7-6, with a 7-4 victory in the tiebreaker. However, Babb won the second set, 6-2. In a super-tiebreaker third set, Dunleavy earned an 11-9 win. Dunleavy is now 2-2 this spring.
Gutierrez faced Josie Rogers at the top singles spot. However, the SFU freshman fell 6-2, 6-4. She is now 1-3 in dual matches.
Bode competed against the Midshipmen's Rozel Hernandez at No. 3. The Red Flash sophomore dropped a 6-3, 6-4 decision and is now 2-2 this spring.
In the match at No. 4, Miller met Kaylah Hodge. The SFU sophomore fell 6-2, 6-2 and is also 2-2 this spring.
Navy won the match at No. 6 by default due to no SFU player available.
"In singles, I thought this was the best the we have competed this season," said Castille. "Navy is a well-coached, deep team and we knew we had to fight hard from the first point to the last. I was happy to see the team step up and come away with two singles matches. We'll definitely look to build on this and have a good we of practice before we play Youngstown State."
The Red Flash returns to action next Saturday at Youngstown State. The Penguins are 2-1 this season.
