Isaiah Blackmon (Charlotte, N.C./West Charlotte) and freshman Randall Gaskins Jr. each scored 20 points to lead Saint Francis to an 89-83 overtime win against Robert Morris on Saturday. In front of 1,510 fans, the Red Flash and Colonials combined for 36 points in overtime, with free throws by freshman
Deivydas Kuzavas (Kretinga, Lithuania/St. Mary's Ryken (Md.)) and sophomore
Jamaal King (Salisbury, Md./Bishop O'Connell (Va.)) sealing the win. The Red Flash improved to 9-12 overall and 6-4 in the NEC, while Robert Morris dropped to 7-16 overall and 3-7 in conference play.
A back-and-forth overtime featured five ties and six lead changes, with Saint Francis hitting six-of-seven shot attempts, all three attempts from beyond the arc, and six-of-seven free throws.
After two free throws by RMU's Matty McConnell to start overtime, sophomore
Josh Nebo (Houston, Texas/Cypress Lakes) answered with a layup. The Colonials' Dachon Burke responded with a dunk, but Blackmon hit his third three of the game to give SFU its first lead of OT, 73-72. On the next possession, Blackmon drove in for a layup.
McConnell and senior
Georgios Angelou (Halkida, Greece/Lykeio Kanithou) traded threes, with Angelou's giving SFU a 78-75 lead with 2:10 left in the period. Stewart then converted a layup through a foul and tied the game by sinking the free throw. On SFU's next possession Kuzavas drew a foul on an offensive rebound and hit the free throw to put SFU ahead by one.
RMU's Clive Allen answered with a three before King drove the lane and got a layup to go as he was fouled. He converted the three-point play with a free throw to put SFU back on top, 82-81, with 52 seconds left. Stewart then responded with a layup to put RMU back in front.
On SFU's next possession, King again drove the lane and kicked it to Angelou in the corner, who found Blackmon on the wing for his fourth three to put SFU ahead, 85-83, with 27 seconds to go.
On a missed three by McConnell, Kuzavas grabbed the rebound and then hit both free throws to stretch SFU's lead to 87-83. A few moments later, King hit two free throws to seal the win.
Blackmon was 7-of-13 from the field and four-of-five from three for his 20 points and he added six rebounds. Gaskins Jr. tallied a career-high 20 points, making 8-of-13 shots, including two threes, to go with four rebounds, two assists and two steals. King scored 11 points and added three rebounds, six assists and a steal. Freshman
Keith Braxton (Glassboro, N.J./The Lawrenceville School) contributed nine points, 13 rebounds and three assists.
Sophomore
Josh Nebo (Houston, Texas/Cypress Lakes) recorded his fourth double-double of the season, with 15 points and 10 rebounds. He also swatted away six shots.
With the six blocks, Nebo now has 108 in his career. On the night, he moved into third-place all-time at Saint Francis, passing Earl Brown (2012-15) and Emmanuel Adekunle (1994-98), who were previously tied for third with 105 blocks. Nebo is just one block away from tying Jerry Mack (1985-89) for second all-time.
Saint Francis shot 42 percent for the game, including 8-of-16 from three, and went 25-of-31 from the free throw line, good for 81 percent. SFU shot 44 percent in the second half before its hot-shooting overtime performance. SFU also won the battle on the boards, 48-35.
The Colonials shot 43 percent for the game and 36 percent from three. RMU hit 50 percent of its looks in the first half, 36 percent in the second half and 45 percent in overtime.
McConnell led Robert Morris with 16 points, including four threes, and six rebounds. Aaron Tate added 15 points, on six-of-eight shooting, and four rebounds, while Stewart had 14 points, four rebounds and six assists.
The Red Flash trailed 33-32 at halftime. SFU survived a cold-shooting first half, in which it shot just 31 percent and was 1-of-6 from three, but stayed in the game by going 11-of-12 from the line. Gaskins Jr. led SFU with 13 points in the half as he hit five-of-six shots. Nebo added eight points and seven boards. McConnell had nine points, on three triples, for the Colonials.
A 12-2 run by Robert Morris gave it an 18-8 lead with 10:28 left in the half. The run started on a three by McConnell, who hit another three during the stretch. Isaiah Still and Billy Giles contributed layups and Burke added a dunk.
RMU maintained a 10-point advantage until a three by Gaskins Jr. cut the SFU deficit to seven, 52-18, with 5:45 remaining in the half. After a layup by Braden Burke, SFU closed the half on a 14-6 run. Nebo started and finished the run with dunks, adding a pair of free throws in between. Angelou was fouled on a three-point attempt and converted all three free throws. Braxton and Gaskins Jr. each hit a pair of free throws, with King also hitting one.
In a tight second half, neither team led by more than six points, with three ties and three lead changes. Blackmon led SFU with 10 points in the second half as he hit three-of-five shots, including two-for-two from three, while Gaskins Jr. had seven and King and Nebo each had five points.
After a layup by King and a jumper by Nebo to pull SFU within one, 37-36, early in the half, RMU then scored eight of the game's next 11 points. Lorenzen Wright hit a three and Braden Burke added a three-point play. Tate had a tip-in to help give RMU a 45-39 lead, its largest of the half, with 14:37 remaining.
An 8-2 run, ending on a three by Gaskins Jr., gave SFU its first lead of the second half, 54-51, with 8:20 to go. Blackmon hit a three and added two free throws during the stretch. A jumper by Nebo extended the SFU lead to five.
A three by Wright put RMU back on top, 63-61, with 3:36 to go. However, Angelou answered with a three to swing the lead back to SFU, 64-63. SFU's lead stretched back to five with a layup by Gaskins and two free throws by Braxton. SFU led 68-63 with 1:51 to go.
On the ensuing RMU possession, Tate made a layup through contact and hit the free throw for a three-point play to cut the SFU lead to 68-66 with 1:36 to go. After stopping SFU on its possession, Stewart drove in for a layup to tie the game with 30 seconds left. King missed a foul-line jumper to send the game into overtime.
The Red Flash travels to St. Francis Brooklyn on Thursday for a 7 p.m. contest on NEC Front Row. The Red Flash earned an 81-56 win over the Terriers on January 5 at DeGol Arena.
