Senior Bowl Stats

MOBILE, Ala. – Saint Francis senior safety Lorenzo Jerome (Sunrise, Fla./J.P. Taravella) continued an impressive January by forcing three turnovers in the Senior Bowl on Saturday.  The Red Flash senior had a standout performance for the North Team, which fell 16-15 to the South Team.  Jerome was the first player in SFU and NEC history to earn an invitation to the Senior Bowl.

After recording two interceptions to earn MVP honors in last Saturday's NFLPA Bowl, Jerome was all over the field on Saturday.  He recorded three tackles, with one for loss, two interceptions and a forced fumble.

On the South Team's second drive of the game, on a 2nd and 15 play, Tennessee QB Josh Dobbs was hit from behind as he was releasing the throw.  The ball popped up in the air, with Jerome making an adjustment in the middle of the field to come down with the interception.  Jerome had a tackle earlier in the drive on a run by NC State RB Matt Dayes.

On the next South Team possession, on first down, Dayes pitched the ball to Texas A&M WR Josh Reynolds on a reverse.  Jerome immediately sniffed out the reverse and burst into the backfield to chase Reynolds down from behind and force the ball loose.  The ball was recovered by USC NT Steve Tu'ikolovatu.  Jerome made a tackle earlier in the drive after Reynolds made a catch on a comeback route.

In the fourth quarter, with the South Team driving in North Team territory, Tiffin QB Antonio Pipkin took a shot to the end zone, with Jerome cutting in front of Western Kentucky WR Taywan Taylor to grab his second interception.  Jerome made a few players miss as he returned the interception out to the North 16.

Jerome led the Red Flash to a 7-5 record this season, helping SFU to win its first ever NEC Regular Season Title and clinch its first ever FCS Playoffs bid.  Jerome was named All-America by six different publications, including Athlon Sports, the Associated Press, College Sports Madness, HERO Sports, STATS FCS and the Walter Camp Foundation.  College Sports Madness named Jerome All-America as both a defensive back and a kick returner.

Jerome was also selected First Team All-NEC as a defensive back and a return specialist, becoming the first player in conference history to be selected First Team All-NEC in four straight years.  Jerome was a four-time First Team selection as a defensive back and earned three All-NEC honors as a returner.

The Florida native recorded 18 interceptions in his Red Flash career, finishing second all-time in SFU and NEC history.  His six interceptions this season were tied for third in the FCS.  He had two picks each against No. 13 Montana and Robert Morris, with one pick against No. 20 Albany and Malone.

Jerome was third on SFU with 59 tackles this season, including 33 solo and 5.5 for loss.  He added 2.5 sacks, five pass breakups and returned a fumble 89 yards for a touchdown, doing all of that in 10 games played.

He impacts the game in multiple ways, placing second in the FCS this year with a 28.9 kick return average after leading the nation with a 31.2 average in 2015.  He returned a kickoff 73 yards for a touchdown, off a squib kick, at Montana.  He also caught a 48-yard touchdown pass in the win at Robert Morris and completed a 33-yard pass to Zack Drayer (Hershey, Pa./Hershey ) in SFU's win over Bryant.  In his SFU career, Jerome found the end zone eight times, in five different ways, with three kick return touchdowns, two interception returns, a punt return, a fumble return and a receiving touchdown.
