Red Flash romp Blackbirds 5-0 to share regular-season title

BOX SCORE Brooklyn, N.Y. - The Saint Francis women's soccer team (9-7-2, 6-1-1 NEC) closed its regular season with a bang on Sunday, downing LIU Brooklyn 5-0 (3-12-2, 1- 6-1 NEC) in inclement weather. With the win, SFU shares the regular-season title with Fairleigh Dickinson, the fifth time since 2011 it has claimed at least a share of the regular-season crown.

Turning Point

Senior Gabi Morales (Madrid, Spain/Colegio La Inmaculada-Marillac) set the tone in the 7th minute, scoring her sixth goal of the season. Senior Leah Hardin (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen) and sophomore Alyssa McGhee (Altoona, Pa./Bishop Guilfoyle) were credited with assists.

Highlights
  • Morales opened the scoring for the second time this week, finishing off some nice build-up work between Hardin and McGhee.
  • Junior defender Shannon McGinnis (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) scored her first goal of the season in the 21st minute, rising high to head home a corner kick.
  • Junior Sara Suler (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) converted her third goal of the season in the 29th minute. Morales and sophomore Abigail Tarosky (North Huntington, Pa./Norwin) were credited with assists.
  • McGhee put an exclamation point on the match with goals in the 85th and 89th minute to take the conference lead in goals with 10. Her first goal was assisted by Morales while the second went unassisted.
Notes
  • Despite sharing the regular-season title, the Red Flash will have to travel to Fairleigh Dickinson for the NEC Tournament. FDU held the tiebreaker over Saint Francis as it beat the third-seeded CCSU Blue Devils who handed SFU its only loss.
  • Saint Francis finishes its conference season with a 6-1-1 record and 19 points.
  • The one conference loss is SFU's fewest since 2013. It lost one game or less in three straight seasons from 2011-13.
  • Saint Francis outscored its opponents 18-4 in conference play.
  • Shots in the match were even at 11-11 but shots on goal were 8-3 for Saint Francis.
  • McGhee led Saint Francis with four shots and three shots on goal.
  • Sophomore Julia Hernan (Collegeville, Pa./The Hill School) made three saves for her 15th career shutout, which ranks third in school history.
  • McGhee and Morales both finished with five points, the first time this season SFU has had two players record five points in the same game. McGhee finished with two goals and an assist and Morales recorded a goal and career-high three assists.
  • The NEC Golden Boot Award stays with Saint Francis as McGhee edged Robert Morris's Kristina Kelley by a count of 10 goals to nine. Morales shared the title last season with six goals.
